HANDBAG RECEPTACLE SYSTEM Filed Jan. 5, 1955 lx 1 47% 16 l i I I ATTO R N EY United States Patent HANDBAG RECEPTACLE SYSTEM Henry J. Walser, White Plains, N. Y. Application January s, 1955, Serial No. 480,839
4 Claims. (Cl. 150-34) The present object is to provide a hand bag receptacle system in which ready access may be had to separate compartments thereof from the exterior of the hand bag without opening the top thereof.
Another object is to provide a novel hand bag construction in which, without opening and fishing through the entire hand bag, ready access may be had to certain objects which should be desirably obtained in a hurry or with greater frequency while other objects will be more fully protected against accidental loss or theft within the interior of the structure.
It is among the particular objects of the present invention to provide a compartmented bag structure in which a carrier of a hand bag may use the upper opening for removal of certain objects when desired, with subsidiary compartments being accessible from the outside for the use of keys, cigarettes, matches and even cosmetics.
Still further objects and advantages will appear in the more detailed description set forth below, it being understood, however, that this more detailed description is given by way of illustration and explanation only and not by way of limitation, since various changes therein may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the present invention.
in accomplishing the above objects of the present invention, it is desirable to form a lower hand bag frame or enclosure which will be positioned in the base of the hand bag and which may have a central compartment only available through the bottom of the interior of the hand bag, with other compartments which may be provided with doors or sliding receptacles which are available from the ends of the hand bag.
These compartments may or may not be locked but they should be of such construction so that the drawers or removable receptacle will be snapped closed when forced home and at the same time will be readily accessible when keys, cosmetics or cigarettes are to be taken or removed therefrom.
In the preferred form of the invention the entire receptacle system is positioned in the bottom of the hand bag and enclosed by or covered by the fabric or facing material of the hand bag so that it does not change the external appearance of such hand bag.
At the same time the interior structure of the hand bag may depend upon or engage this sheet material receptacle with the drawers and/or internal compartments to form part of the frame of the bag.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Fig. l is a front perspective view of the handbag according to the present invention showing the special bottom receptacle therein.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view showing one of the drawer members partly removed from the base of the handbag upon an enlarged scale as compared to Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical side sectional view upon an enlarged scale as compared to Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the receptacle taken upon the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a top perspective view of the bottom receptacle before mounting within the hand bag.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 there is shown a handbag A with the carrier straps B and the usual top opening C.
The present invention is particularly directed to the lower receptacle structure D which as shown has side drawer or removable receptacles F and G and the central protected receptacle H.
The entire receptacle structure may be formed of an aluminum sleeve-like closure having the bottom wall 10, which may be integral with or a sheet inside of the base 3 of the handbag.
The top of the receptacle D is formed of two sheets 12 and 13 which form a false bottom for the handbag A and also act as guides for the removable receptacles F and G.
The removable receptacles F and G may have bottom plates 14 and 15 and side flanges 16 and 17 which are guided against the side walls 18 and 19 of the lower portion of the handbag, or which may consist of metal inserts inside of the side walls of the bottom of the handbag.
The drawer members are provided with intermediate partitions 20 and 21 so as to form double compartments 22 and 23 in the drawer at the left and 24 and 25 in the drawer at the right.
in the form shown the outer compartments 22 and 25 may serve as ashtrays while the inner compartments 23 and 24 may serve to receive cigarettes and matches.
The end or face walls 26 and 27 of the drawers F and G may have the snap closures 28 and 29 and they may also be provided with swing loop handles 30 and 31 to enable the drawers F and G to be forced home or withdrawn when access is desired.
The engagement handles or rings 30 and 31 may be received in recesses 32 and 33 in the outer walls 26 and 27, respectively, of the drawers of the removable receptacles F and G.
The end walls 26 and 27 may be faced with the same material as the handbag A or they may be so finished as to match the material of the handbag A.
Between the back walls 40 and 41 of the drawers F and G and only accessible from the interior of the handbag is the compartment H. The compartment H has the base wall 42, the end walls 43 and the side walls 44.
The top of the receptacle H is closed by the swinging members 45 having the hinges 46 which are desirably spring connected so as to lower the plates 45 to the posi tion shown in Fig. 3. These plates have knobs 47 which enables the closures 45 to be lifted from the interior of the handbag.
The structure shown may be conveniently located in the base of the handbag without extra expense, without change or deformation of the exterior of the handbag, and at the same time not only provides the interior protective compartment for valuables but also permits ready exteriorly accessible compartments for cigarettes, cosmetics, keys or other objects which are frequently sought more often than other materials or objects retained in the handbag.
The entire construction may be conveniently placed in the handbag without increasing its weight, and it may 7 be formed of a light aluminum' sheet metal or a light magnesium sheet metal.
While there has herein been illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of the invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, what is claimed is:
1. A top main opening, ladies hand bag having an interior receptacle framework and an exterior fabric covering, said covering extending over the sides, ends and bottom of the framework, said framework including a sleeve extending from end to end in the base of the hand bag and removable receptacles in said sleeve being accessible from the lower portion of the ends of the framework, said covering having openings at the lower portions of said ends of the framework to give such accessibility to said receptacles.
2. The hand bag of claim 1, said sleeve being of rectangular cross section and having three compartments, a central compartment accessible from said top main opening and two end compartments accessible through said openings at the lower portions of the ends of said framework.
3. The hand bag of claim 1, said removable receptacles consisting of drawers which slide in and out of said sleeve. 7
4. The hand bag of claim 1, said sleeve being of rectangular cross section and having top, bottom and side walls and drawers located in said sleeve sliding along I said top, bottom and side walls andsaid sleeve having spaced transverse partitions acting as back stops for said drawers and the space between said transverse partitions serving to form a third compartment.
