UNITED STATES FREDERICK KALTWASSER,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS.
STOVE-PIPE FITTING AND FASTENING.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,798, dated June 5, 1883,
I Application filed January "I, 1882. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK KALTWAS- SER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belleville, in the county of St. Clair, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stove-Pipe Fittings and Fastenings, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the fitting and fastening embodying my invention. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are longitudinal sections of modifications thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of means for retaining a stove-pipe in the hole or opening leading to the flue or chimney, as will be hereinafter set forth. I
Referring to the drawings, Arepresents a thimble, which is adapted to be inserted in the hole or opening cut or formed in the wall of an apartment leading to the flue or chimney, the limit of insertion being the end flange, a,
2 5 which abuts against the wall surrounding said opening. Secured to and projecting inwardly from the inner face of the thimble is a flange, b, which may be continuous or in sections, said flange being located, preferably, near the end opposite to the flange a. The end of the stove-pipe to be fitted in the hole or opening of the wall is inserted in the thimble A, its limit being the inner flange or flanges, 1), whereby said end is prevented from entering to too great extent into the flue or chimney and affooting the draft. It is evident that the same result is accomplished by the hooks b, Fig. 2, which are secured to the flange a, the bodies of the several hooks forming a skeleton thimble, or by the flange b, Fig. 3, which is secured to the exterior of the piece of pipe which enters the opening or hole in the wall. In Fig. 4 the thimble is flanged at both ends and placed in position during the building of the wall, and provided with the inner flanges, b, against which the end of the stove-pipe isto abut, as in the previous case.
B represents a rotatable rod, which is passed through the flange a, and formed on the end ad- 50 jacent to said flange with a hookor eye, 0, and.
on the opposite end, or inner end of the thimble, with a hook, d, the rod extending in the longitudinal direction of the thimble and guided and retained on the hooked end by means. of an eye, 6, which is secured to the thimble. When the stove-pipe is in position, the rod B is rotated so that the bend orhook d, which is in the chimney or flue, overlaps the inner edge of the pipe hole or opening, as in Fig. 1. Then a wire, chain, or cord, f, attached to the elbow or top length of the pipe, is fastened to the hook or. eye 0 of the rod B, whereby the pipe is held in position and prevented from displacement in the pipe hole or thimble. In order to hold the bend or hook firmly against the wall of the chimney or flue, the rod has a sliding motion in the bearings in the flange a and eye 6, so that it may be drawn outwardly and pressed against said wall, the wire, chain, &c., employed to connect the pipe and rod being stretched or rendered taut in position before attaching it to the hook or eye 0.
It is evident that when the wire or cord f is disconnected from the rod B the latter may be rotated so as to clear the bend or hook it of the wall of the chimney or flue, whereby the pipe and thimble may be removed.
It is evident that the invention is applicable to pipes for ranges, furnaces, and all other heating apparatus.
I am aware that the flanges b on the interior of the thimble for limiting the introduction of the stove-pipe into the opening leading to the flue or chimney are not new, and do not therefore, broadly, claim the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 1. The fastening for the pipe in the hole'or opening of the wall, consisting of a rotatable rod with a bend or hook, d, substantially as and for the purpose set. forth.
2. The flange a, the bent or hooked rod B, and the connection f of the pipe, combined and operating substantially as and for the purpose 5 set forth.
' FREDERICK KALTWASSER.
