Description
Feb..26,'1957 INVENTOR. HUGH K. FISHER United States Patent PACKAGES Hugh K. Fisher, St. Louis, Mo., assignor to James R. Kearney Corporation, St. Louis, Mo., a corporation of Missouri Application August 5, 1954, Serial No. 448,012
3 Claims. (Cl. 206-47) This invention relates generally to packages and more specifically to a receptacle adapted for use in receiving articles for transportation, the predominant object of the invention being to provide a receptacle which is provided with recessed insert means for supporting articles within the receptacle and which is provided with a separate compartment for the reception of loose parts of the articles packaged within said receptacle.
Fig. l is a perspective view of the package of the present invention showing same in a closed position.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the various parts which make up the improved package in exploded form.
In the drawing, wherein is shown for purposes of illustration, merely, one embodiment of the invention, A designates in Fig. l the improved package generally. The package A comprises a receptacle 1 which may be formed from cardboard, corrugated board, or other suitable material, said receptacle having front and back walls, end walls, and flaps which produce bottom and top walls when said flaps are in their closed positions. Arranged within the receptacle 1 is a pair of inserts 2 and 3, each of said inserts being made up of a multiplicity of layers of corrugated board, or other material, and each of said inserts has formed therein a recess 4 which is so shaped and proportioned that a portion of an article X packaged by the receptacle 1 is received in the recess in the insert, as shown in Fig. 2. The recess in each of the inserts 2 and 3 extends through less than all of the layers of material of which the insert is made so that at one side of each insert the recess in said insert is closed by at least one, and preferably several, unrecessed layers of the material of which the insert is formed, as shown at 5 in Fig. 2.
The completed package includes a divider 6 of corrugated board, or other suitable material, which is arranged, as is shown in Fig. 2, between adjacent faces of the articles X packaged by the receptacle 1. Also, a sheet 7 of corrugated board, or other material, rests on the top edges of the inserts 2 and 3 and the divider 6 and this sheet of material 7 provides the bottom wall of a compartment 8, whose top wall is produced by the folded flaps at top of the receptacle 1, and this compartment 8 ice receives loose parts of the articles packaged by the receptacle 1.
The particular package illustrated by the drawings is intended particularly for use in packaging a pair of electrical cutouts, but, obviously, various other articles may be packaged in accordance with this invention, and when cutouts are the packaged articles the hangers for supporting the cutouts, and the bolts for securing the hangers in place, are received within the compartment 8.
I claim:
1. A package comprising a receptacle, a pair of insert members located within said receptacle, each of said insert members having an inwardly facing recess formed therein which receives a portion of an article packaged within said receptacle whereby said portions are supported by said insert members, said recess of each insert member being of such depth that it extends only partially through the thickness of the insert member, a sheet of material which extends from side to side and end to end of said receptacle and provides a separate compartment within said receptacle which receives loose parts of the articles packaged by said receptacle, and a second sheet of material medially positioned between said insert members and which serves as a separator and buffer which is interposed between and protects parts of the articles packaged by said receptacle, the first-mentioned sheet of material resting on edge portions of said pair of insert members and on an edge portion of said second sheet of material.
2. A package comprising a receptacle, a pair of insert members located within said receptacle, each of said insert members having an inwardly facing recess formed therein which receives a portion of one of a plurality of articles packaged within said receptacle, a separator member positioned between said insert members, and a sheet of material resting on an edge portion of one of said insert members and on an edge portion of said separator member and so positioned as to form a separate compartment in said receptacle.
3. A package comprising a receptacle, a pair of insert members located within said receptacle, each of said insert members having an inwardly facing recess formed therein which receives a portion of at least one of a plurality of articles packaged within said receptacle, a separator member positioned between said insert members, and at least one substantially flat sheet of material resting on an edge portion of at least one of said insert members and on an edge portion of said separator member and so positioned as to form at least one separate compartment in said receptacle.
