To all whom it may concern:

Be it known thatI, TIMOTHY L. FISHER, of Arlington, in the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Easels, of which the following is a description sufficiently full,

clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings,forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure'l is an isometrical perspective view, representing the easel in use and attached to a table; Fig. 2, a like view representing it mounted on a tripod; and Fig. 3, a perspective view, showing the clamp and method of attaching the rest to the body of the easel.

My invention relates to the class of easels which are used by artists in painting, sketching, &c.; and itconsistsin a novel construction and arrangement of the parts,-as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a more effective device of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use. A necessity has long existed for an easel of this character adapted to be attached to a table, shelf, or any convenient support, and which does not require a stand constructed especially for it. My invention is designed to meet this requirement; and to that end I make use of means which will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation, its extreme simplicity rendering an elaborate description unnecessary.

In the drawings, A represents the body or bar of the easel, B the rest, and O the holder.

The body is grooved longitudinally on its edges, as shown at m, to receive the plates K. These plates' are attached to the under side of therest and bolder and extend into the grooves, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby securing the rest and holder to the body and adapting them to slide thereon.

A compound clamp is employed for attaching the easel to itssupport. This clamp consists of the main clamp D and auxiliary clamp E. The main clamp has two horizontally-projecting jaws, ff, and also two laterally-projecting flanges, z 2, its lower jaw being provided with a vertically-arranged thumb-screw, L. The auxiliary clamp E is attached to the body of the easel by the screws 1), and is provided'with two flanges, d d, between which the flattened body of the clamp D is inserted by the bolt a and nut 71.. The bolt passes entirely through the flanges d dand body of the clamp D, and at its end opposite the-nut is provided with the head i, so that when the nut is turned in the flanges d, which yield slightly, the flanges grasp the clamp D, and thereby secure the body A "at any desired angle.

In the use of my improvement thejawsff of the clamp D are passed over the edge of the table G, and the thumb-screw L turned in until the easel is firmly attached thereto, the flanges z preventing it from canting or turning sidewise. The nut n is then loosened, the body A adjusted at a proper angle, and the nut turned in until the body is secured in position. The rest B is next adjusted on the body and fastened by the screw I, after which the canvas H may be placed on the easel, and secured by the holder 0 and screw m in a manner .which will be readily obvious without a more explicit description.

Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- 1. The improved easel herein described, the same consisting of the body A, provided with the grooves-0c, rest B, and holder 0, the clamp D, provided with thejawsfand screw L, and the clamp E, provided with the flanges d, bolt a, and nut 12, constructed, combined, and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.

2. In an easel, the clamp D, provided with the jawsj'flflahges z z, and screw L, in combination with the clamp E, provided with the flangesrl (1, bolt a, and nut 11, substantially as set forth.
