DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part ot' Letters Patent No. 278,066, dated May 22, 1883. i Application filed January 15, 1883. (No model.)
` of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in doors, particularly designed' for churches and other public buildngs.
The object of this invention is to so bang the door thatit can open or swingin either direction and be readily opened in case of an emergency; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of the parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth. p
Figure 1 is a perspective .view of my door, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line m x in Fig. 1. 4 4
A represen ts the docr-frame, and B the door. The rear edge of the door has ri gidly secured to it a round post, a, into the ends of which are secured in any convenient manner `the pintles b, which are designed to engage in suitable holes at the top and bottom of the door-frane, the round post of the door, when the latter is in place, entering a similarlyshaped recess, which isformed in the face of the door-jamb for that purpose. For the purpose of giving greater rigidity to the door the upper and lower edges thereof may have secured to them an iron strap, c. In hanging a door in this manner it will swing in either direction, and when wide open will stand at right angles to its post. When it is desired to have the door swing so that it will shut flat back against the wall, it may be set near the corner of the door-jamb, which should be slightly recessed to allow of a free turn of the post.
to the door by means of hinge -or other suiti able device, while its opposite end is provided with an arm or detent, G, which engages with the lower side of the lever D, such detent entering a recess cut in the wall of the door to receive it, and a suitable spring is placed between this plate and the door.
In practice, supposing the doors to be closed and locked by the bolts, if there is an accident suiiicient to cause a rush of the occupants of the building to the doors they would crowd against them with sufficient force to prevent their being uulocked, were they not provided with this plate or similar device upon which the pressure or force of the crowd is brought to bear, causing it to close against the door and compelling its detent to raise the lever and withdraw the bolts from their fastenings.
While I have described but one door, it is evident that in double doors each should be provided -with this device and hung in this manner.
'What I claim as my invention is-- In combination with a door and fraue constructed substantially as described, the bolts 0, lever D, plate F, and detent Gr, when constructed, arranged, and Operating substantially in the manner and for the purposes specified.
