PUNCH.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 27,793, dated April 10, 1860.
State of Vermont, have invented an Improved Punch to be Used in the Stamping of Letters in Stencil-Plates foi" Marking Linen with Indelible or other Ink; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which Figures l, and 2, denote side views of a punch made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3, is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4, a face end view of it.
The nature of my invention consists in making each side face of the punch curved, and with its curve starting from the end face at a right angle thereto, the advantages of such invention or improvement over the common mode of making such letter punches, being that it enables the plate to be punched with a clean cut or little or no bur on its lower side and also renders the punch more durable owing to the increased amount. of stock near the stamping or end face.
The common mode of forming the let-ter punches for stamping stencil plates has been to file their side faces in planes each of which generally made an obtuse angle with the end or stamping face of the punch. This not only requires the beveled side faces of the punch to be made much larger than When made on my improved plan, but weakens the punch or makes it less durable than one made in my improved manner. Further more, it causes the cut of the punch in a plate of metal to have a roughness at the lower surface of the plate. With my improved punch, this roughness or bur is not so liable to be produced the cut being smooth and even.
In carrying out my invention, or in the formation of each side face of a punch, I make use of a grinding wheel and arrange its aXis and the end face of the punch in one plane, so that while the wheel is being revolved against the side of the punch bar or rod it shall out in a curve which at one eX- tremity shall be at a right angle to the stamping face of the punch.

I claim- An improved punch as made with its side faces curved relatively to the stamping or end face of it substantially as described.
