STEAM-ENGINE.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent'No. 277,897, dated May 22, 1883,

To all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY HARTIG, of
Brooklyn, in the countyof Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and usey the other end with a circular casing, and of a reciprocating hollow piston having interior valve-seats for an oscillating cylindrical slidevalve. The slide-valve is recessed with steampassagcs at opposite sides, which communicate with the steam supply and exhaust ports of the cylinder. A connecting crank-rod of the driving-shaft passes through a recess of the cylindrical slide-valve, andis jointed thereto by a ball-and-soeket joint and pivoted at its outer end to the piston.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are vertical longitudinal sections of my improved steam-engine, showing the piston in two different positions. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the same, taken on a plan at right angles to the sections shown in Figs. 1 and 2; and Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively adetail top view of the piston and adetail section of the slide-valve.

The oscillating slide-valveE is provided at diametrically-opposite sides with longitudinal steam-passages c 6, one of which extends from the recess (1 at one side of the piston D to a shoulder, c, at the opposite end of the slide-valve, while the recess 6 at the opposite side of the slide-valve extends from the recess d at the opposite side of the piston D to a shoulder, e, of corresponding size at that end of the slide-valve E near the steam-supply port.
The connecting-rod (J is seated by a hall-andsocket joint,f, inthe lower part of the slidevalve E, extended through the centrally-recessed portion of the same, and pivoted at its outer end to the piston D, as shown clearlyin the drawings.
By admitting steam through the supply-port b, it passes through recess (1 of the piston and stean'i-passage e of the slide-valve E to theinterior of the cylinder, filling the space at one side of the piston, while the steam is simultaneously exhausted through the opposite steam-passage e, recess d, and exhaust-port b. The piston D is thereby moved forward, and the crank of driving-shaftcarried thereby,
by the connecting-rod 0, through one-half of its revolution. A balance-wheel on the driving-shaft (not shown in the drawings) assists the crank of the driving-shaft to pass overthe dead-points in the usual manner, and causes thereby the reversal of the osciilatin g piston, so that live steam enters into that part of the cylinder that has just exhausted, while the steam is exhausted from that part thathas before received live steam. The revolution of the driving-shaft is thereby completed. The reciprocating motion imparted to the piston produces the regular rotary motion of the shaft.
The arrangement of the oscillating slidevalve at the interior of the piston furnishes a steam-engine of simple and compact ceustruction, which is specially adapted for machines of smaller size and power.
Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a steam-cylinder closed at one end and provided with a circular casing at the opposite end, of a hollow reciprocatingpistoinof a connecting-rod pivoted to the driving erank-shai't'and the piston, and of an oscillating slide-valve arranged at the interior of the piston and being jointed to the slide-valve, substantially as set forth.
2. In a steam-engine, the combination of the cylinderclosed at one end and provided with a circular casing at the opposite end, a hollow reciprocating piston having recesses at opposite sides and interior seats, an oscillating slide-
