g United States Patent O GUTTER WATER CONTROL STRUCTURE Joseph W. Swenson, Summit, N. J. Application September 15, 1954, Serial No. 456,263 z ciaims. (ci. 299-58) This invention relates to a new and useful means for utilizing rain water coming oi the roof of a building especially a house, instead of letting this water be wasted by running into a pipe connected to a sewer. My invention will be understood and appreciated by reference to the annexed drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of a building showing my new device installed in different positions on a gutter or even on a drain pipe leading from the gutter.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the structure as applied to a gutter.
Figure 3 is a view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a view on the line 4--4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.

ln the various views wherein like members refer to corresponding parts, 1 is a container made of suitable metal such as copper which is perforated at 2 in a special manner, i. e., by forcing the metal outwardly so as to leave a peripheral rim 3 preferably having a plurality of irregular shaped lingers 4, the purpose of which will be later described. Also a recess or depression 5 that is formed in the bottom with holes 6 similar to the holes 2 but preferably smaller in diameter, the purpose of which will be later pointed out.
The structure 1 can be made in one piece or the ends 7 and 8 may be made separately and folded over as shown in Figure 4 and fastened to the body portion 1 in any suitable manner and these ends 7 and 8 may be cut out to tightly receive the ends 9 and 10 of a gutter as shown in Figures 1 and 3 which illustrates how the structure may be placed to utilize the water coming down into the gutter and into my new structure which is placed in the gutter so that the water coming out through the holes 2 and 6 will be sprayed over the ower or plant beds which are ordinarily utilized in connection with houses especially the modern type.
In the form shown in Figure 6 there may be placed over the central part of the device 1 an adjustable cover 11 held in position by one or more wing nuts 12 positioned in slots 13 in the upper part of the structure 1.
By loosening the wing nuts 12 the cover 11 may be moved Patented Jan. 8, 1957 ICC f to the right or left to direct the outflow of water through the holes 2 and 6 away from the window Wl or the door and steps S.
In the form shown in Figure 7 the cover 11 may be made in two separate parts 14 and 15 which can be positioned as shown in Figure 7 or by other suitable means so as to direct the outflow of water through only the centrally located holes 2 and 6 in the structure.
In Figure 8 the structure 1 has an interior baille plate 16 which will direct the water coming through the pipes 9 and 10 to twooutlets 17 and 18 depending on the 1ocation of the structure.
In Figure 9 the baiile plate 16 is replaced by two curvilinearly formed arms 19 and 20 each having spray outlets 21 and 22 which are adjustable at 23 so as to direct the water coming through the spray nozzles 21 and 22 in any desired direction.
In Figure l0 pipe P is provided with holes 24 to allow the water coming down the pipe P to pass through the holes 24 into the pipe 25 which may extend in any desired position with respect to the plants or flowers to which is delivered water from the spray nozzle 26 which may be adjustable diagonally or vertically by the member 27.
In Figure 11 the structure 1 may be placed in the position shown at the L portion ofthe house in Figure 1 and the pipe 28 may have a sieve like deector 29 wherein the side shown as the hypotenuse of a triangle is a solid side of the deflector structure, so that water striking the at surface is thrown oli toward the holes 2 to direct the water out through the holes 2. Normally the pipe 28 without the structure 1 may have an outlet 30 or the pipe 28 may extend to a sewer construction.
In Figure l2 I have shown a special form 31 for the structure into which the ends 32 and 33 of the gutter may be forced.
In Figure 13 the structure 34 is somewhat similar to that shown in Figure l2 but it has U-shaped openings 35 in its opposite ends to receive the gutter ends, the latter being held in place in these openings 35 by means of pivoted hooks 36. Attached to the bottom of the structure 32 is a bottom 37 with holes 38 therein. The bottom 38 is provided with a slide 39 which can be operated by means of a hook 40. By movement of the slide 39 the number of holes 38 for exit of the water may be varied by moving the slide 39.
From what has been said it will be seen that this gutter water control structure can be applied in numerous ways which will meet various conditions, hence I do not wish to be unduly limited in the interpretation of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. vA sprinkling device comprising, a short open topped trough-like member having side, end and bottom walls, an aperture within each of the end walls appreciably smaller than the end walls, each end wall having means adjacent the aperture adapted to secure the end walls to a roof gutter, said trough-like member having a plurality of irregular outwardly extending water discharge orifices in the side `and bottom walls.
2. Means for utilizing water moving in a roof gutter as set forth in claim 1 further dened in that said structure may have an adjustable cover which may be in a plurality of parts for directing the flow of water from the structure.
