Dec. 18, 1956 A. BLOCK ABRASIVE POLISHING DEVICE Filed Oct. 10, 1955 ALECK BLOCK INVENTOR. BYM ZZQZQ HIS ATTORNEY United States atent ABRASIVE POLISHING DEVICE Aleck Block, Culver City, Caiif.
Application October 10, 1955, Serial No. 539,623
11 Claims. (Cl. 51-194) This invention relates to an abrasive polishing device and more particularly to a circular abrasive band and means for rotatably mounting the same.
It is an object of my invention to provide an. abrasive device for light grinding and polishing purposes which utilizes a circular abrasive band which is simply and economically manufactured of discardable materials. It is particularly an object of my invention to provide such a band which comprises a replaceable unit which may be quickly and easily removed and replaced with a fresh unit when it has become worn. Toward this end, it is a further object of my invention to provide a mounting means for such a band which permits and provides simple and rapid replacement of the abrasive band.
Another object of my invention is to provide an abrasive band of the type described in which fresh abrasive material becomes available for use as the old abrasive material is used and worn away, thus extending the life of the band and providing improved and substantially uniform abrasive action throughout the extended life of the band.
In essence, my invention contemplates providing an abrasive band which is formed around a central circular core member, which preferably comprises a flat ring of substantially rigid but economical material such as cardboard tubing or the like. Mounted around the entire outer surface ofthe ring are short strips of cloth or paper which are coated with suitable abrasive material on the Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of the same;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the same taken on line 44 of Fig. 1; r
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of my abrasive band.
A preferred embodiment which has been selected to illustrate my invention comprises an abrasive band 14 which is formed around a central circular core member 11, which preferably comprises a flat ring of substantially rigid but economical material such as a piece of cardboard tubing or the like. The width of the core member 11 may be varied in accordance with the size of the material being polished.
A plurality of small substantially rectangular abrasive strips 12 are adhered to the outer surface of core mem ber 11. The abrasive strips 12 extend axially with respect to core member 11 around its entire circumference. The abrasive strips 12 are preferably cut from cloth or paper which is coated with suitable abrasive material on one side thereof, the other side being plain. The plain side of each of the strips 12 is adhered to the outside of the core member 11 and to the adjacent abrasive strip with a suitable adhesive such as vinyl glue or the like. The strips 12 are arranged so that each strip overlaps the adjacent strip a substantial amount, the amount of over.- lapping preferably being approximately one-half the width of the strip.
It should be noted that a suificient number of strips 12 should be provided so that. the exposed portion of each strip is substantially small in area. If the exposed area is too large, the abrasive material will wear off the outside of the strip, leaving smooth paper or cloth exposed. If the exposed area is smaller, the edge of each of the strips 12 strikes the material being polished and the strip wears away, with the wear extending inwardly from the edge to expose fresh abrasive material therebeneath. With a large number of strips, the total area thus worn away is considerably greater than if a small number of strips were used.
outer sides thereof. The abrasive strips extend axially with respect to the core member and are adhered thereto. The abrasive strips are disposed in a continuously overlapping relationship so that as the edge of each strip becomes worn away, it exposes the fresh abrasive material on the strip disposed therebeneath. The band is sufiiciently rigid to permit it to be easily handled and replaced as a unit. It may be discarded when worn out without loss of valuable parts or materials.
My abrasive band is adapted to be mounted on a rotatable mandrel which includes a cylindrical core formed of resilient material. The outer diameter of the core is substantially equal in size to the inner diameter of the band. The ends of the core are compressed to cause the diameter of the core to expand and engage the inner surface of the band. The ends of all of the abrasive coated strips extend into the interior of the band, where they engage the core and are tightly held between the core of the mandrel and the core member of the band.
My invention also comprises such other objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.
While I have shown in the accompanying drawings a preferred embodiment of my invention, it should be understood that the same is susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of my abrasive band in use;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same taken from the opposite side;
The opposite ends of each of the strips 12 extend into the interior of the core member 11 and are adhered thereto. The ends preferably extend a substantial distance inwardly from the edge of the core member 11 for reasons hereinafter set forth.
In use, my abrasive band 11 is mounted on a mandrel 13, which comprises an elongated shaft 14 having an integral wedge 15 at one end thereof. The other end of shaft 1 is adapted to be attached to a suitable source of i rotation. The shaft 14 extends through centrally disposed openings in an inner end plate 16, a cylindrical core 17 and an outer end plate 13. The outer end plate 18 is provided with a concave portion which receives the wedge 15 of shaft 14; The portion of shaft 14 adjacent inner end plate 16 is screw threaded to receive a nut 19. As the nut 19 is tightened, the end plates 16 and 18 are forced together, exerting pressure on the ends of the core 17. The core 17 is formed of resilient material such as rubber or the like, so that it expands when nut 1 is tightened.
The outer diameter of the core 17 is preferably normally slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the abrasive band it The band 141 is mounted on the core 17 and nut 19 tightened to expand the diameter of core 17. As this occurs, the core 17 exerts pressure against the ends of each of the strips 12, pressing them tightly against the core member 11 to prevent the strips from coming loose during rotation of the band.
This action is important to the operation of my invention, since the adhesive alone is ordinarily insufiicient to hold the strips 12 on the core member 11. The pressure of the core 17 reinforces the adhesive and prevents the ends of the strips 12 from being pulled loose from the core member 11 during the highspeed rotation necessary to use the band for grinding and polishing purposes.
- The abrasive material on the ends of the strips 12 within the interior of the core member 11 further provides added frictional grip between the ends of the strips 12 and the tending axially with respect to said core member, each of said strips havingabrasive material on the exposed side thereof, said strips being disposed in substantially overlapping relationship to each other, the opposite ends of each of said strips extending a. substantial distance into and beingiadhered to the interiorof said core member, there being a sufficient numb r of Said strips so that each strip has an exposed'edge adapted to Wear away in use to expose the portion of the adjacent strip disposed therebeneath. I
