NITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS H. OHUBB, OF POST MILLS, VERMONT.
FISHING-ROD TIP.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 277,230, dated May 8, 1883. Application filed April 19, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. UHUBB, of Post Mills, in the county of Orange and State ofVermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Funnel-Tops forFishing-Rods, of which the following'is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to funnel-tops for fishiug-rods; and it consists in the peculiar conof the same.
In the drawings, 0 represents the head of the funnel-top, provided with a deep annular groove or seat, I), as represented in Fig. 2, for the reception of the tube D of the funnel-head. A center hole, 0, is drilled in the back end of the head 0, as shown in Fig.2, for entry within it of a round swagiug-tool. The tube D of the funnel-head is then entered within the annular socket or seat b, after which the swaging-tool is driven downinto or within the center hole, 0, to expand the central portion of the metal of the head 0, circumscribed by the seat I), and cause it to give afiaring or spread configuration to said seat in an outward direction and a corresponding configuration to the inner end of the tube D. After the funnel-top has been formed, as herein described, it has the hole 9 made through it for the line of the rod to pass through. By this construction it will be seen that the tube D is secured to the head 0 by a dovetailed joint, h, and if said joint should become loose or spring inwardly it can readily be tightened by drivingthe swaging-tool into the center hole, 0.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture, the funnel top for a fishing-rod herein described, consisting of the head 0, provided with the deep annular groove or seat b at its inner end, and inclined opening g, made through the head, and tube D, having its outer end inserted in the annular groove b of the head, and se- I cured thereto bythe dovetailed joint h, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the tapering tube D, of the head 0, provided with the opening 9, annular groove 1), and central hole, 0, substantially as described, whereby the dovetail joint can be expanded when sprung inwardly, as set forth.
THOMAS H. OHUBB.
