\ B. S. ROY.
LUBRIUATING'EUUENTRIG.
Patented May 1,1883.
ITNEEEEE lNVEN-Tlilli UNITED STATES PATENT -OFFICE.
BOZIL S. ROY, OF WORCESTER,MASSACHUSETTS.
LUBRICATI NG -ECCENTRIC.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,885, dated May 1, 1883. Application filed January 22, 1883. (No model.)
i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BOZ'IL S. ROY, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricating'Eccentrics; and I declare the following to be a description of my said invention, sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide a practical and efficient means for the self-lubrication of eccentrics and their surrounding straps without increase in their dimensions or the addition of projections or protuberances, so that such eccentrics can be operated and lubricated in close proximity to each other or adjacent parts without interfer ing. This object I attain by mechanism constructed as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of my self-oiling eccentric. Fig. 2 is a side and sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sec .tional view of the self-oiling eccentric on a plane perpendicular to the supporting-shaft.
In the references to the drawings, A denotes the supporting shaft, on which the eccentrics are mounted. B denotes the eccentric plate or disk. (3 indicates the strap and 0 its end loop. The bearing-surfaces between the eccentric B and surrounding strap 0, I make self-lubricating by combining therewith an oilwell, m, formed within the casting or body of metal of which the parts are made. Said well an is furnished with a conduit leading to the surfaces, in which is arranged a wick, m, for regulating the flow of oil to the surfaces to be lubricated, and a suitable opening having a screw plug or stopper, n, is provided for the convenient introduction of oil into the well or cavity m when required. By this method of constructing eccentrics and their connectingstraps I avoid lateral projections beyond the usual thickness of the eccentric disk or sur-- rounding parts, and obviate any liability of would occur with an attached oiler by reason of the irregular throw of eccentrics. It'also permits of eccentrics being operated in close proximity to each other, or to adjacent parts of mechanism without interfering therewith, while it provides for constant lubrication of the surfaces, thus preventing excessive wear, and allowing of the straps being kept so close and tight as to prevent rattling even when operating at high speeds. The self-lubricating eccentrics of the construction described may be used on various classes of machinery with beneficial results and great practical economy and convenience.
In constructing the eccentrics the conduit from the oil-well to the bearing-surface should be arranged in such position that the end 'of thewick on will stand above the level of the oil within the reservoir at when the machinery is not running. (See dotted line, Fig. 3.)
If the strap-arm O is to work in vertical position', the wick can be arranged within a tube inserted from the lower part and extending up into. the cavity or reservoir sufficiently far to carry the end of the wick above the surfacelevel of the oil, the tube runninginto the cavity in the manner indicated by dotted lines}.
Fig. 1. 7
What I claim as of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the bearing-surfaces of the eccentric B and its surrounding strap (J, of the oil well or reservoir m, formed within the thickness of metal of which the parts are made, substantially as shown, with the lubricating wick or packingm, leading to the said bearing-surfaces, for regulating the passage of oil from the reservoir to said surfaces, as set forth, whereby said eccentric is rendered selflubricating without increasing its lateral dimensions. g

BOZIL S. ROY. Witnesses:
