1 Claim. (Cl. 248-211) This invention relates to a device comprising a bracket adapted to be used in connection with a ladder for holding a can and more particularly a can of paint, preferably so that said can is positioned at one side of said ladder. Paint is sold in cans which in general are not provided with handles. It is desirable to have some means for holding such a can of paint in a convenient position on a ladder when the operator is mounted on said ladder for the purpose of painting.

It is an object of this invention to provide a device adapted to be removably secured to a ladder and to removably hold a can of paint in a convenient position on said ladder.

It is another object of this invention to provide a device adapted to be removably secured to a rung and side mem' ber of a ladder and have a member adapted to removably hold a can of paint outwardly from said ladder.

It is more specifically an object of this invention to pro vide a device having means adapted to be removably secured to a rung and side member at either side of a ladder, a member oscillatably secured to said means and extending outwardly therefrom, and a member secured to said last mentioned member for removably holding a can of paint or other material.

It is also an object of this invention to provide a device having an elongated member adapted to have a portion disposed in a can of paint and under a rim of the same, said member being oscillatably secured in a bearing and said bearing being secured to a member having portions adapted to be removably secured to a rung and side member of a ladder.

These and other objects and advantages of the inven tion will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which:

Referring to the drawings, a portion of an ordinary rung type of ladder 10 is shown having rungs 10a and 10b and side members 100 and 100'.

According to the present invention, a bracket is shown comprising a plate member 12. Said plate member has a main portion 12a which has curved hook portions 12b and 120 respectively formed at its ends. Plate 12 also has a midportion 12d extending at right angles thereto having an end portion 12e extending downwardly and substantially parallel to main portion 12a. Said plate member 12 is thus substantially U-shaped in end elevation. The same may be made of any suitable material and in the embodiment of the invention illustrated it is made of sheet metal.

Secured to the top surface of said midportion 12d and extending transversely of member 12, is a bearing 13. In the embodiment of the invention as illustrated, said bearing is shown as being semi-cylindrical and bent from a piece of sheet metal. Disposed in said bearing 13 is a member having an elongated tubular portion 15. Said tubular portion has diverging extending and portions 15:: and 15b which are shown as being respectively twisted outwardly slightly and said portions respectively have downwardly bent end portions 150 and 15d.

Extending across said end portions 150 and 15d is a fiat strip member 16 having inwardly and downwardly inclined end portions. Said strip member in the embodiment of the invention as illustrated is made of sheet metal and may be secured to said depending end portions by any suitable means, such as by welding. Said member extends for some distance at each side of said depending end portions.

Disposed substantially at the point where end portions 15a and 15b begin to diverge, is a depending elongated lug 15e. Spaced inwardly of said depending lug 15e and at the opposite side of tubular portion 15 are provided short upstanding lug members 15 adapted to act as stop members. inwardly of said lugs 15] for approximately the width of bearing 13 there is provided an aperture 15g which extends through said tubular portion 15 and is adapted to have a fastening member 17, such as a cotter pin, disposed therethrough.

A handle 21 is provided. Said handle comprises a flat elongated base portion 21a and a semi-circular holding portion 21b having its ends secured as by welding to portion 21a, and said ends are spaced inwardly respectively of the ends of said portion 21a.

In operation, said tubular portion is disposed in bearing 13. Member 15 engages one end of bearing 13 and acts as a stop for preventing movement of member 15 in one direction and member 17 engages member 12 and prevents movement of member 15 in the opposite direction. Member 15 is thus prevented from moving outwardly of said bearing 13. Member 16 is disposed in a can of paint 20 and is pulled to one side of the interior of said can so that its end portions come to rest under and engage the underside of the rim 20a of said can. Said can will engage member 152 and will abut up against the same. Said can is thus held positively in position.

Member 12 is grasped by the operator and is held in a generally horizontal position. End portion 12b is then placed under a rung of said ladder at the desired height and member 12 is moved to embrace side member 10c adjacent said rung. Member 12 is then turned frontwardly so that hook portion 1211 comes up and over said rung 10a. Bearing 13 is then over the front side of side member 100. Thus said bracket holds said can 20 rigidly so that it will have no lateral movement toward or away from ladder 10 and yet it is suspended from osciliatable member 15 so that said can 20 will always swing to and be in a vertical position. Said bracket may be positioned at either side of a ladder and may be positioned at the side opposite that on which it is shown in Fig. 2 by simply turning said bracket sideways and reversing the position of plate member 12 so that hook portion will be placed about a rung in the same manner as hook portion 12b, as described above.

Thus it is seen when said bracket is placed in operating position in a can of paint, handle 21 is provided for carrying said bracket and can of paint as when mounting a Patented Oct. 16, 1956 tioned on said ladder.

Thus it is seen that I have provided a simple and ethcient bracket for holding a can of paint in a convenient position at the side of a ladder. Said bracket is easy to manufacture from easily procurable material and is made of avery few parts. It has been tested and'found to be very successful and practical and is :nowt being produced on a. commercial basis.

It will of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, arrangement details and :proportions of the parts, Without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which generally stated, consists in a device capable ofrcarrying out the objects above set forth, in the parts and combinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claim.
