Description
(No Model.) J. G. KELLER.
CHIMNEY PROTECTOR.
Patented Apr.Z 4, 1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' JOHN G. KELLER, OF MONTIGELLO, ILLINOIS.
CHIMN EY-PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,423, dated April 24, 1883.
Application filed January 31, 1883. (N 0 model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. KELLER, of Monticello, Piat t county, Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Chimney-Protector, of
above defects.
The invention consists in a metal strip adapted to be attached to the roof, around the base of that part of the chimney projecting above the roof, between which strip and the chimney a packing of rubber is introduced.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of a chimney provided with my improved protector, and Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same.
A flanged strip of metal, A, is tacked or otherwise secured to the roof B,around the chimney O, and a packing, D, of rubber is inserted between the metal strip and the chimney. The
packing must be of such thickness that it rests closely against the chimney. The water running down the outer surface of the chimney cannot pass the rubber packing, and is thus prevented from flowing down the chimneyinto the building. The flanged metal strip A is preferably madein two U-shaped sections, of which one section is nailed to each slope of the roof, so that the shanks of the U-shaped sections abut.
The frame or casing formed by the metal strips can be replaced by a wooden frame, if desired; but I prefer to use the metal strips. If desired, the rubber packing can be cemented in the casing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--' 1. The herein-described chimney-protector, consisting of a metal strip adapted to surround the base of that part of the chimney above the roof, and a rubber packing placed between the said strip and the chimney, whereby the water willbe prevented from flowing down the chimney into the building, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the chimney O, of the flanged metal strip secured to the roof, around the base of that part of the chimney above the roof, and the rubber packing D, held,
between the said strip and the chimney, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
