This invention relates to improvements in an ironing board and appertains particularly to one adapted for easy attachment to a counter or table top, being designed to dlsconnectibly hook on the counter or table top edge.

An object of the invention is to provide a novel hookon type of ironing board that is secure in its attachment and steady for use, preferably inclining upwards slightly toward its free end so that the user presses more heavily thereon as the leverage from the anchored end increases,

thus overcoming any tendency for the free end of the board to sway.

A further object of the invention is to provide an attaching bracket with the table edge-engaging, hooklike portion being downwardly offset below the board.

A further object of the invention is to provide an ironing board with a transverse supporting block near one end, and a hook-on attaching bracket at the same end, said block having a non-skid cushion member on its underside to cooperate with said bracket in holding said board secure and steady.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a hook-on type ironing board of the nature and for the purpose described, characterized by structural simplicity, light weight, few parts and relatively low cost of production is thereby rendered commercially desirable.

To the accomplishment of these and related objects as shall become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as shall be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

The invention will be best understood and can be more clearly described when reference is had to the drawings forming a part of this disclosure wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

In the drawings:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the ironing board detachably mounted on a kitchen table;

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the board;

Figure 3 is a perspective detail of the underside of the board, showing particularly the supporting block and hook-on bracket; and

Figure 4 is a perspective view of a slightly modified form of attaching bracket.

This ironing board may be made in any desired size, preferably in the regular length of about four feet and a width of about twelve inches and in sleeve board size about half the length and width of the former. For simplicity, the sleeve board size is shown in the drawings.

The ironing board top 1 which may be of conventional tapered shape and with rounded ends has a post 2, near the larger end, in the form of a transversely disposed block secured in any suitable Way to the underside of the board and provided with a non-skid means such as the spaced pair of rubber headed pins 3 on its lower side to engage on the top of the table 4 or other supporting surface.

The attaching bracket 5 lies on the underside of the ironing board extending generally from the transverse post in the direction of the near end of the board and has an intermediate, substantially vertical, downwardly 01fsetting portion 6 from the bottom of which an inwardly facing horizontally disposed U-shaped hook portion 7 continues, being formed outwardly thereof, that is on the opposite side of said vertical offset from the upper,

board attaching end, the mouth of said U-shaped hook portion being of a depth to slide on over the edge of a counter or table top and the substantially horizontal upper side of said hook being downwardly offset from said board top 1 a distance less than the height of said post 2 so that when the board is hooked on a table top 4, as seen in Figure l, the free end of the ironing board top 1 is inclined upwards; thus as the user works nearer .the free end of the board and the leverage distance from the fulcrum post 2 increases,-.the tendency of the board to sway or wobble is overcome by the greater pressure exerted on the iron in consequence of the rise in the board.

The particular type of hook-on bracket 5 seen in Figures l, 2 and 3 is formed of stiff wire with the ends projecting into bores 8 in the rear of the block 2 near the top thereof and the reaches of the wire between the block and the downward offset 6 being steadied by eyelets 9 screwed into the underside of the board top. A stouter design of bracket 5a is shown in Figure 4, being almost identical in side elevation but formed of a stamped sheet metal plate and has its base preferably secured directly to the underside of the ironing board top with its inner edge abutting the block 2 for the width thereof. Additionally, the mouth of the corresponding U-shaped hook-like portion 7a may be flared to facilitate its application to the edge of the supporting element.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be manifest that an ironing board is provided that will fulfil all the necessary requirements of such a device, but as many changes could be made in the above description and many apparently widely different embodiments of the invention may be constructed within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matters contained in the said accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limitative or restrictive sense.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is:

1. an ironing board for removable mounting on a table, counter or the like comprising in combination a shaped ironing board top, a post secured on the underside of said ironing board top near one end thereof on which said ironing board top fulcrums, and a bracket secured to the underside of said ironing board top and extending horizontally therealong from the top of said fulcrum post toward said end of said ironing board top said bracket having its inner edge engaging said post and having a downwardly offset hook-shaped portion on its free end removably engageable with the edge of a table, counter or the like in free sliding relation and that has a binding grip thereon when said ironing board top fulcrums on said post as when weighted, the upper side of ,the hook shaped portion of said bracket being downwardly offset from the underside of said ironing board top a distance less than the height of said post so that said ironing board top inclines upwardly toward its free end.

2. An ironing board for removable mounting on a table, counter or the like comprising in combination a shaped ironing board top; a post secured on the underside of said ironing board top near one end thereof on which said ironing board top fulcrums; and a bracket having one end secured to the underside of said ironing board top and extending horizontally therealong from the top of said fulcrum post toward said end of said ironing board top, said bracket having an intermediate, substantially vertical, downwardly offsetting portion with a horizontally disposed, U-shaped hook portion on its free end that is disposed on the opposite side of the offsetting portion from the board-attached end and is removably engageable with the edge of a table, counter or the like in free sliding relation and that has a binding grip thereon when said ironing board top fulcrums on said post as when weighted, the upper side of said horizontally disposed 'U-shaped hook portion being downwardly ofiset from the ironing board top a distance less that the height of said post, whereby said bracket hook may support said ironing board top with its free end inclined upwards.

An ironing board for removable mounting on a table, counter or the like comprising in combination a shaped ironing board top; a post secured on the underside of said ironing board top near one end thereof on which said ironing board top fulcrums; a bracket secured to the underside of said ironing board top and extending horizontally therealong from the top of said fulcrum post toward said end of said ironing board top, said bracket having its inner edge engaging said post and having a downwardly offset hook shaped portion on its free end that is removably engeable with the edge of a table, counter or the like in free sliding relation and that has a binding grip thereon when said ironing board top fulcrums 'on said post as when weighted; wherein said bracket is formed of a piece of wire doubled on itself in .the form of a U and the inner ends of the arms of said U lie Within the said post; and eyelets mounted on the underside of said ironing board top engaging and bracing the arms of said U-shaped bracket.
