NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER SLOAN, OF PITTSTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAND TRUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,951, dated April 17, 1883.
' Application filed January 2, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDERSLOAN, of Pittston, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and 1mproved Hand-Truck, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved hand-truck which has a broad bearing-surface at the lower or front end, so that the articles to be transported on the truck will not be injured by the lip or nose at the front or lower end of the truck.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation of my improved hand-truck. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the under side of the plate pivoted to the guard or lip of the truck.
The hand-truck A is of the usual construction, and is provided at its lower or front end with the nose or lip B, in the usual manner. A plate or frame, 0, is pivoted at or near its middle to the upper edge of the nose B, in some suitable manner, preferably by means of a pintle, a, passed through apertures in the end standards of the nose, and through eyes I) on the under side of the plate or platform 0, so that the said plate or platform can swingon the upper edge of the guard. Arod, E, passes through a series of eyes, d, in the under surface of the plate 0, at the inner edge-that is, the edge toward the handle end of the truckand the said rod is provided at the ends with longitudinally-slotted arms F, through which 7 thumb-screws G pass, which pass into suitable screw-threaded apertures in the inner surfaces of the side pieces of the truck. In place of the rod E having slotted arms F, independent slotted arms or bars pivoted to the plate 0 may be used, and in place of the thumb-screw l G screw-bolts fixed in the side pieces of the truck and provided with winged nuts may be used. The plate A can be inclined more or less to the truck, and can be locked in the desired position by means of the thumb-screws. As shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, it can project in the same direction as the nose orlip B, and thus increase the length of the same, thus facilitating the raising of heavy articles for the purpose of loading them on the truck; or it can be locked in an almost level position on the lip or nose B, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, and thus increase the bearing-surface of the same and prevent tho sharp edge of the nose or lip from cuttinginto the article on the truck or otherwise injuring the said article. The plate 0 can be pivoted to any bandtruck of the usual construction. The eyes I) can be arranged between the end standards of the nose, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what .I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a hand-truck, of a plate or frame pivoted in the upper edge of the lip or nose of the truck, of slotted arms pivoted to the said plate, and of locking-sore ws passed through the said slotted plates, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose setforth.
2. The combination, with the hand-truck A, of the plate 0, pivoted to the upper edge of thelip or nose B on the truck, the rod E, pivoted ALEXANDER SLOAN.
Witnesses:
