DYAS SHELTON, OF SANTA ROSA, CALIFORNIA.
RUB-IRON FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,865, dated April 17, 1883. Application filed October 3, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, DYAS SHELTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa- Rosa, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented a new and useful Rub-Iron for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is a perspective view, showing my invention in position for operation. Fig. 2 is a view of the same detached. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to rub-irons for vehicles or devices for taking the Wear of the wheels rubbing against the box or body, as in turning; and my invention consists in an angle-plate having a detachable roller to take the wear, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a right-angular plate of iron or other suitable material, the outer edge or angle of which is provided at one end with a socket, B, and at the other end with a sleeve or collar, 0, having a transverse screw-threaded perforation, D, to receive a set-screw, E, which serves to hold in place a steel roller, F, inserted in said sleeve and socket. The roller F is seated in a concave recess or hearing, R, in a rib, S, formed longitudinally upon angle-plate A, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
The angle-plate A, with its socket B and sleeve 0, may be cast or otherwise formed in a single piece, and its wings or leavrs G are to be provided with openings H to receive the screws or nails by which the device is in practice attached to the wagon-body.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. One of the devices is attached to each side of the wagon box or body in such a position that the front wheels shall in turning come in contact with the portion of roller F exposed between the socket B and sleeve 0. The roller will take the wear and prevent friction between the wheels and the wagon-box, .th us preventingundue strain. When Worn the roller F may be easily removed and a new one substituted by removing the set-screw E.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an improvement in rub-irons for vehicles, the angle-plate A, having socket B, sleeve 0, provided with transverse threaded perforation D, in which is fitted a set-screw, E, and longitudinal rib S, having a concave recess or bearing, R, said socket, sleeve, and rib beingformed integrally with said angle'plate, in combination with the roller F, consisting of a plain cylindrical piece of hard metal seated detachably in the socket B, sleeve 0, and recess or hearing R, as herein described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DYAS SHFLTON. Witnesses:
JOHN TYLER CAMPBELL, WlLLIAM W001) PORTER.
