G. GUARINO Aug. 14, 1956 NON-VIBRATING BARBER'S RAZOR BLADE HOLDER Filed Feb. 6, 1952 GASPER GUARINO INVENTOR ATTORNEY FEGEQ United States Patent NON-VIBRATING BARBERS RAZOR BLADE HOLDER Gasper Guarino, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application February 6, 1952, Serial No. 270,153
1 Claim. (Cl. 30-331) This invention relates to razors used by barbers and an object of this invention is to provide a razor blade holder made of sheet metal and in which the razor blade is interchangeable and reversible, the holder being constructed in a manner to cause the blade to be clamped close to the cutting edge to prevent vibrations of the blade during shaving.
Another object of this invention is to provide a razor blade holder having spring arms providing a longitudinally extending opening therebetween for frictionally retaining the razor blade therein.
Another object of this invention is to provide a razor blade holder having spring arms, one having laterally extending tongues and the other having openings to receive the tongues, the tongues serving for supporting the razor blade while being removed from the holder, and whereby the razor may when inserted therein be held firmly in interengaged position.
Another object of this invention is to provide a razor blade holder for elongated blades of ribbon-like thickness and having an edge guard or cover pivotally mounted on the handle pivot and freely movable into interlocked engagement with the free end portion of the holder to cover one of the cutting edges of the razor blade when a double edge blade is used.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described, and the combination and arrangement of parts will be shown in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim which forms part of this specification.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
Figure l is a view of the razor blade holder and shaving blade, the holder being broken away to show a blade with cutting edge held at both ends.
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 22 in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the razor blade holder.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of a pivotally mounted cover for the razor blade holder.
Figure 5 is an end view of the cover shown in Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of one of the arms forming the razor blade holder.
Figure 7 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 7-7 in Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a side elevation of the other arm forming the razor blade holder.
Figure 9 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 9-9 in Figure 8.
Figure 10 is a front view of a blade used with this invention.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the numeral 10 indicates a razor blade holder for use by barbers and adapted to receive and positively grip an elongated razor blade 11 of ribbon-like thickness with a double line clamping effect on the blade while leaving an edge portion of the blade exposed for effective working condi- 2,758,373 Patented Aug. 14, 1956 tions, the double line clamping of the blade also serving to prevent vibrations of the blade.
The razor blade holder 10 comprises a razor blade mount or elongated body 12 having two parallel flexible arms 13, 13', which are secured in spaced-apart relation to provide a narrow slot 14 therebetween of a size for frictionally mounting the razor blade 11 therein. The blade 11 has a notch or opening 15 at each end, the notches having right-angular inner faces. A flat plate 16 is secured between the arms 13 by rivets 17 passing through clearance apertures 17 in the arms 13, 13. The arms 13, 13' are bent at 18 to form the narrow blade engaging slot 14.
The razor blade holder 10 also comprises a hollow cover 19 having one end pivoted on a pin 20 in the rear portion of the elongated body 12. The cover 19 is of substantially inverted U-zshaped cross-section having inclined side walls 21, 21. The pin 20 passes through a clearance aperture 22 in the cover 19 and through clearance apertures 22 in the arms 13 and 13.
It is to be noted that at the free end of the cover 19 is a closure plate 23 which is suitably fixed to the cover, such as by soldering, so as to close the end opening to the cover.
I have found in practice that it is necessary to clamp the razor blade as close as possible to its cutting edge in order to prevent vibrations or chatter of the blade during shaving. For this purpose I made the two clamping arms 13, 13', with longitudinal side ribs 25, 25', the ribs terminating at the bottom edges of the arms. As best shown in Figure 2, it will be seen that the razor blade 11 is clamped at a considerable part of its upper portion by the upper portions of the arms 13, 13', but that at its lower edge portion, the razor is clamped only along the linear bottom edges 24, 24 on the respective arms 13, 13.
The clamping edges 24, 24 secure the razor blade from opposite sides, so that there is no tendency for the razor blade to vibrate during shaving. The blade holder herewith disclosed makes it possible to expose a much greater portion of the blade at the cutting edge than has been possible heretofore and without any vibrations.
It will be noted that I have provided removed upper portions 26, 26 of the arms 13, 13' at their free ends. These removed portions facilitate grasping of the razor blade when inserting or removing the blade from the razor blade holder.
The removed top edge portions thus make it possible to manually grip the sides of the razor blade without contacting the cutting edge of the blade which would tend to cut the fingers of the user and even spoil the honed cutting edge of the blade.
As best shown in Figure 6, it will be seen that the ribs 25, 25 are of lesser length than the length of the lower portion of each arm. This arrangement makes it possible to clamp the razor blade at its opposite faces by flat portions 27, 27' of the said arms and also along the two linear bottom edges 24, 24 formed by the ribs 25, 25. This arrangement of clamping, I have found in practice to hold the razor blade 11 with such a positive grip that the chance of vibration of the razor blade eliminated.
As shown in Figures 6 and 7, the flexible arm 13' has two openings 28, 28. It Will also be seen in Figures 8 and 9 that the arm 13 has two tongues 29, 29 extending laterally therefrom. The tongues 29 are of a size to fit the notches or openings 15 in the blade 11 (Fig. 1). The tongues 29, 29 serve for supporting the razor blade 11 whereby the razor blade may be held firmly in interengaged position with the arms 13, 13'.
It is to be noted that the structure herein disclosed is primarily for the use of barbers. Its use eliminates the necessity for honing and grinding the razor blades as it is intended that renewal blades will be sold at such a low price that the used blades will be disposed of. The device however, permits stropping of the razor blades as required for longer use.
The removed angular portions 26, 26' expose an end portion of the blade 11, and this exposed end portion is grasped by two fingers of the user for mounting or removing the blade and while the blade is between the arms 13, 13'.
As shown in assembled relation in Figure 1, it will be seen that the tongues 29 are at the ends of the blade 11-.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described and illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it will be understood that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claim.
I claim:
A razor blade holder, comprising a body having two parallel flexible arms secured at one end in slightly spacedapart relation and being bendable toward or away from each other at the opposite free end, a razor blade having notches at opposite ends, one of said arms having tongues spaced to enter said notches in said razor blade and prevent motion of said blade relative to said arm, the other of said arms having openings in alignment with said tongues providing visibility, each of said arms having a longitudinal, outwardly extending rib close to and adjacent the bottom edge of the arm and a removed portion at the free end thereof, permitting grasping said blade while mounted between said arms, and a hollow cover pivotally mounted on said blade holder, said cover being of a depth to engage the ribs to bring its interior surface out of Contact with the non-operating edge of said razor blade, the lower edges of said arms contacting said blade along two bottom lines to securely clamp said blade against vibration.
