SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,745, dated April 10, 1883. Application filed January 17 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES ANDERSON and JAMES OLIVER, of South Bend, in the county of St.Joseph and State oflndiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an improvement in plows, the object being to provide a plow with an improved reversible plow-point and plowshare, the parts to be constructed and arranged so that either the plow point or share may be readily reversed and secured in place, and so that either part, when unduly worn, may be removed at slight trouble and expense.
' With these ends in view our invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts. as will hereinafter be described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of our improvement. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the landside. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the under side of the plow. Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of the under side of the plow with the plow-point removed. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the plowpoint. a view in side elevation.
A represents the plow-standard, having the landside B. The foot 0 of the standard is constructed with a wedge-shaped open slot, D, and with a recess, E, formed on its under side, said recess being formed by the walla near the landside, and by the depending end and side flanges, b c. The shank f of an eyebolt, F, is inserted through the thickened portion G, located in rear of the slot D, the eye f of the bolt being located in the rear end or crotch of the open slot, while a suitable nut and washer, 9 g, are placed on the screw-threaded end of the shank f.
The reversible plow-point H is made with correspondingly beveled or tapered opposite faces, h h, and with rearwardly-projeeting Fig. 6 is a rear end view, and Fig. 7 is length by the central wedge-shaped partition, K, which has a square rear end, 70. As the sides of the flanges extend outwardly beyond the wedge-shaped partition K, there is formed on each side thereof a tapering groove, L, the forward ends of which merge into a beveled slot or recess, Z, extending to the outer edges of the plow-point. The flanges I I are provided with bolt-holes m m, through which is inserted the bolt M, the head on of which is received in the countersunk bolt-holes, while a nut, N, serves to secure the parts in place.
0 represents the plowshare, which is secured to the standard by means of the bolt 0, or in any other suitable manner. The rear edge, 12, of the share abuts against the lower edge of the mold-board Q, while the rear end, q, of the uppermost flange of the reversible point also abuts against the lower inclined edge, q, of the mold-board. The plowshare is made with a sharp or comparatively sliarp cutting-edge, r, and gradually increases in thickness to its rear edge, 1", at which point it is of the same thickness as the lower edge of the mold-board, so that the surfaces of the share and moldboard at their line of juncture will be practically flush with each other. The ends 8 a of the share are outwardly inclined from the upper edge downward, and at opposite ends of the cutting-edger are formed the converging edges t t. When the reversible point is applied to the foot of the standard the uppermost flange rests on the foot on opposite sides of the open slot, the share not extending quite to the slot, so that a supporting-ledge, a, is formed to support the inner edge of the flange, while its outer edge is supported on the hearing a of the foot. The edge 15, at the inner and lower corner of the share, is received within the beveled recess or slot l in the side of the point. The edge t is received beneath the undercut shoulder t of the point, while the inclined edge a" of the flange abuts against the inclined end of the share. The sides of the wedge-shaped partition K of the point bear 9 against the sides of the wedge-shaped slot in thefootofthestandard. Theundermost flange snugly fits within the recess E on the under side of the standard. The inclined edge t bears against the wall a, while the end and IOC ' fastening bolt M.
m in the flanges of the plow-point and through the eyef of-the eyebolt, and is secured by the nut N. The'nutg on the shank of the eyebolt is then turned, and operates to draw the point rearward and firmly secure it against displacement. The point is readily reversible, the opposite sides and edges being correspondingly beveled, so that the contour of the upper surface and of the landside of the plow is preserved when the point is reversed. The share can also be readily reversed, and, owing to the fact that it is made tapering in thickness from its cutting to its rear edge, the joint between the share and mold-board is made perfectly even and the surfaces uniform. Owing to the fact that the corner of the share is interlocked with the point and breaksjoint therewith, the share is prevented from turning or twisting out of place, and a neat and clean \vearingjoint is insured between the point and the share. The plow-point is provided with extended bearings on the upper and lower side of the foot of the standard, and hence any vertical movement or displacement is obviated, while the spreading of the flanges is prevented by the Again, the plow-point is furnished with extended side bearings both within the open slot and on the top and bottom of the foot of the standard, and hence is prevented from any lateral displacement.
It is evident that many slight changes in the construction and relative arrangements of parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit of our invention, and hence we would have it understood that we do not restrict ourselves to the exact construction and arrangement of parts shown and described.
We are aware that the forward end of a plowshare has been provided with an open slot, within which is secured the shank of a reversible slip nose, the shank being constructed to interlock with the side walls of said open slot; and we would have it understood that we make no claim to such construction. Our improvement is essentially different from the construction of parts above referred to, in that we employ a reversible point that bears upon the upper and lower sides of the standard-foot, and fits within an open slot formed in the forward end of the standardfoot.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a standard having an open wedgeshaped slot in its foot, of a reversible plow-point, constructed with rearwardly-projecting flanges that fit on theupper and under sides of the standard-foot and with an intermediate wedge-shaped partition that fits within the slot in the foot ofthe standard, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a standard having an open slot formed in its foot, of a reversible plow-point provided with rearwardlyprojecting flanges or extensions that fit on the upper and lower sides of the standard-foot, and constructed to interlock with the side walls of said open slot in the standard-foot, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a standard provided with an adjustable eyeholt, of a reversible plow'point and a bolt extending through the flanges of the plow-point and the eye of said cyebolt, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with a standard having an open slot in its foot, a thickened per tion in rear of the slot, and an eycbolt, the shank portion extending through said thickened portion of the standard and the eye portion located in the crotch of the slot, ofa reversible plow-point having perforated flanges and a bolt extending through the flanges and eyebolt, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with reversible plowpoint having beveled slots l and undercut shoulders 1', of the reversible share having its lower corners provided with shoulders 1, substantially as set forth.
