2 Claims. (Cl. 331) This invention relates to a guard attachment for beds and has for its primary object the protection of infants and small children and of hospitalized patients including wounded servicemen.

The construction of this invention features the provision of a pair of supporting arms on which a guide panel can be pivotally and transversely movably attached. This guide panel is adapted to prevent any person lying on a bed from rolling or falling off of the bed. The supporting arms of this attachment for beds are adapted to be secured to the underside of the mattress supporting means of hospital beds, youths beds, and any conventional bed, and are equally adaptable for use on hospital ships and hospital airplanes used in evacuating the wounded.

Still further objects of the invention reside in the provision of a guard attachment for beds that is strong and durable, simple in construction and manufacture, capable of being installed on any of the various types of existing beds and which is relatively inexpensive to produce.

These, together with the various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this attachment for beds, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way of example only, wherein:

Figure 2 is a side elevational view showing the device as installed on a bed and showing in dotted lines the guard panel in a rotated intermediate position;

Figure 3 is another elevational view of the invention shown installed on a section of a bed with the guard panel in a lowered position;

Figure 4 is another elevational view shown with the guard panel in a stowed position;

Figure 5 is a. perspective detail illustrating the means for securing and vertically holding the guard panel in a stowed position relative to the supporting arms; and,

Figure 6 is a sectional detail view of the locking means for holding the guard panel in a vertical position.

With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numerals 10 and 12 generally designate a pair of supporting arms which have telescopically slidably inserted therein supporting arm extensions 14 having seat clamps 16 preferably welded or otherwise attached thereto, the seat clamp 16 including a threaded bolt 18 actuated by means of a handle 20 so as to clampingly support the entire attachment to the slat supporting bed rails 22 or other mattress supporting means. Of course, if found necessary other clamps, not shown, of conventional construction can be utilized to support the attachment as may be desired.

Terminally secured to and depending from the outer sides of the supporting arms 10 and 12 are a pair of carriage rails 24 and 26. Each of the rails is provided with a pocket 28 at the front end thereof and a stepped portion 30 at the rear end. The railings 24 and 26 are adapted to be engaged by rollers 32 mounted on shafts 34 which are secured to the vertical frame members 36 and 38 of a guard panel 40. The rollers 32 are provided with a concave groove 42 within which the carriage rails 24 and 26 are engaged.

Carried by the supporting arms 10 and 12 are a pair of ears 44 and 46 which are internally threaded for threaded reception of cylindrical housings 48. Extending through. each of the apertures 50 in the end walls of the housings 48 is a rod 52 having a collar 54 secured thereto by means of set screws 56 or other suitable means. Threadedly or otherwise secured on the outer ends of the rods 52 are handles 58. Biasing the end walls of the housings 48 and the collars 54 are coil springs 60 coaxial with the rods 52. When the guard panel 40 is positioned in vertical position, the rods 52 are adapted to extend into a tube lined aperture 62 in the frame members 36 and 38 of the panel 40. When the guard panel 40 is in an upright position, the rollers 32 will be seated in the pockets 28 in the carriage rails 24 and 26.

When it is desired to lower the guard panel 40, it is merely necessary to withdraw the rods 52 from their seats using the handles 58. Then, the panel may be rotated until it reaches a horizontal position as is shown in Figure 3 at which time it may be pushed inwardly. The support arms 10 and 12 have pins 64 secured thereto on which the rollers 66 are mounted. The pins 64 and rollers 66 are mounted so as to aid in the support of the guard panel when the guard panel is in a stowed position as is shown in Figure 4.

It is to be noted that this panel 40 is adapted to be used as a guard for preventing small children from falling out of a bed or for preventing a patient on a hospital ship or airplane from being tossed out of his bed should comparatively rough weather be encountered. Further, additional clamps or supporting means may be provided for securing the guard rails 10 and 12 in a more rigid manner if such is considered necessary depending upon the particular application of the device.

Since from the foregoing, the construction and advantages of this attachment for beds are readily apparent, further description is believed to be unnecessary.

However, since numerous modifications will readily occur to those skilled in the art after a consideration of the foregoing specification and accompanying drawings, it is not intended to limit the invention to the precise embodiment shown and described, but all suitable modifications and equivalents may be readily resorted to which fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

1. A guard attachment for beds comprising a pair of spaced supporting arms adapted to extend transversely to a bed, means carried by said supporting arms for securing said attachment to a bed, carriage rails depending from said supporting arms, a guard panel, and guide means depending from said guard panel engaging said carriage rails supporting said guard panel for transverse movement along said carriage rails, said guide means including rollers rotatably mounted on a shaft attached to said guard panel, said rollers being mounted on said carriage rails, said carriage rails having pockets at one end thereof providing means for lockingly seating said rollers with said guard panel in a vertical position.

A guard attachment for beds comprising a pair of spaced supporting arms adapted to extend transversely to a bed, means carried by said supporting arms for securing said attachment to a bed, carriage rails depending from said supporting arms, a guard panel, and guide means depending from said guard panel engaging said carriage rails supporting said guard panel for transverse movement along said carriage rails, said guide means including rollers rotatably mounted on a shaft attached to said guard panel, said rollers being mounted on said carriage rails, said carriage rails having pockets at one end thereof providing means for lockingly seating said rollers with said guard panel in a vertical position, a pair of ears secured to said supporting arms, and spring pressed locking elements carried by said ears for locking engagement with said guard panel to hold said guard panel in a vertical position.
