. HENRY o. BARKER, or SEDALIA, MISSOURI.
. BRICK-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,700, dated March 27, 1883. r
' Application filed December 23, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY 0. BARKER, of Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brick-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of myimproved brickmachine,,and Fig. 2 is a' similar view from the other side.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
My-invention has relation to machines for pressing dry clay into bricks; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings the letterA indicates the table of the machine, which has a recess, B, in which the presser-blocks G and D move,'forming the mold. These blocks slide between two uprights, E, and are guided by rollers F and G, extending into grooves H in the uprights. In the ends of block 0, and opening inward, is a recess, 1, into which extends the end of a. lever, J, having a roller, K, and pivoted upon uprights E in a bearing, L. The
lower block, D, has a recess, M, in the lower rear corner, which opens to the rear and downward,-into which the end of .a lever, N, having a roller, 0, and pivoted in a bearing, 1?, extends. The ends of levers J' and N are hinged to two toggles, Q, which are hinged to a head,
R, sliding in guides S, and hinged to a pitman, T. This pitman T has a slotted head, U, in which slides a wrist-pin, V, fastened upon the rim of a cog-wheel, W, which derives its motion from a pinion, X.
The clay is fed. from a hopper, Y, into the feeder a, which slides under the hopper upon the table A. A short arm, I), is hinged to the rear end of the feeder, and a lever, c, is hinged to the said arm. This lever ispivoted in a bearing, d, upon a brace, e,'of the frame, and
an arm, f, having a projection, g, in its other end, and sliding in bearings h,is
hinged toits' of a lever, n, which is pivoted in a bearing, 0, and the upper-part, p, of which is curved in toward the wheel, so as to enable roller jto reach it and engage it.
To the lower end of lever n is hinged an arm, q, which is hinged to the one arm 1' of a bell-crank, pivoted at.s, the curved arm 1? of which passes under the roller G, lifting it and the lower presser-block when the arm 1' is drawn back. I
The operation of the machine will be easily understood by the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. The dry clay is fed from the hopper into the opening Z in the feeder. The feeder is brought forward and drops the clay'into reoess B upon blocks D, at the same time pushing the last brick forward. The feeder is thereupon drawn back, the toggles Q straightened, and the blocks pressed together, forming a brick. As the toggles are bent the upper block is raised, and the roller 0 upon lever N is lowered; but roller j, pressing upon lever n, operates the bell-crank r t and raises the lower block flush with the table, when the feeder slides forward, pushing the finished brick forward, and depositing its load after block D is dropped. In sliding forward, block G is tilted forward, swinging upon rollers F.
, It will be seen that by the pitman T having slotted head U it will allow the wheel W to turn for a short space of time without operatin g the toggles, in which time the projections operate the feeder and the lever, which lifts the lower block.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- a 1. In a. machine for pressing bricks, the upper plunger, 0, having rollers F, sliding in grooves H in uprights E, and recess 1, for the reception of the end of the operatin g-lever, and lower plunger, D, having rollers G sliding in grooves H and recess M, substantially as shown and set forth.
2. The combination of the plungers C and D, having rollers F and Gr and recesses I and M, with levers J and N, having rollers K and O, bell-crank a" t, and means for operating them, substantially as shown and set forth.
3. The combination ofthe plungers (J and I), having recesses I and M, levers J and N, having rollers K and O, toggles Q, cross-head R, sliding in guides S, pitman T, having slotted head U, and wheelW, having wrist-pin V, substantially as set forth.
4.. The combination ofthe plungers (J and I), levers J and N, toggles Q, cross-head R, pitln'an T, having slotted head U and wheel W, having wrist-pinV, with the feed and discharge slide a, and bell-crank 1' t, and means for operating them, substantially as shown and set forth.
5. The combination of the feed and discharge slide to, arm b, lever 0, arm m, lever 70, arm f, having projection g and wheel W,having projecting rollers i and j, with the plungers (l and D and means for operatingthem, substantially as shown and set forth.
6. The combination of the lower plunger, D, having recess M and roller G, and means for operating it, bell-crank r t, arm q, lever n, and wheel W, having projection with plunger'O and means for operating it, and feed and discharge-slide a and means for operatingit, substantially as shown and set forth.
7. The combination of the table A, having recess B and uprights E, having grooves H, plunger 0, having recess I and roller F, plunger D, having recess M and roller G, levers J and N, having rollers K and O, toggles Q, crosshead R, guide S, pitman T, having slotted head U, wheel W, wheel X, feed and discharge slide a, arm I), lever 0, arm m, lever: 70, arm f,
having projection g, bent lever n, arm q, and
bell-crank r t, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have. hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY O. BARKER.
