2 Claims. (Cl. 118 -38) This invention relates to a coating applicator and particularly to an applicator to supply cementitious material to strip roofing material and for cutting the strips into the desired width for various roofing or repair operations.

In the merchandising of roofing material, it is customary to provide such material in relatively elongated sheets or strips and in the fabric type of material, this is frequently Wound into a tight roll containing sufiicient material to lay approximately 100 sq. ft. of roofing. In various roofing applications, such as laying gutters, applying roof edges, roof flashings on tile walls, doing repair work and the like, it is customary to apply a coating of cementitious material to one side of the roofing material, after which the strip of roofing is secured in place on the usual sheathing.

Heretofore, it has been customary to apply such material either by means of brushes or trowel-like applicators which frequently resulted in uneven application of cementitious material and consequent imperfect sticking or adhesion of the roofing material to the sheathing or to other portions of the roof material.

Likewise, in the construction of roofs from sheet material, it is frequently desirable to cut the usual roll widths down to strips of lesser width to perform the desired operations therewith.

The present invention provides an applicator by which a smooth even coat of cemen-titious material may be supplied to one side of a strip of material, such as a roll of sheet roofing, and also means are provided adjacent the applicator for slitting or cutting the strips to any desired width.

It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide an improved cement applicator.

It is a further object of the invention to provide an applicator for applying an even coating of cementitious material to strip material.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a coating device provided with suitable slitting knives to provide the desired width of finished coated material.

Other objects and many of the attendant advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the ac companying drawing in which:

Figure 2 is a back elevation of the applicator; and

Figure 3 is a cross-section through the applicator taken substantially on the plane indicated by the section line 33 of Figure 2.

In the exemplary embodiment according to the invention, a supporting frame comprises like members 10, 1 2, 14 and 16 preferably constructed of steel angle members and having a rectangular top frame 18 likewise constructed of angle members and secured to the tops of the legs to 16, inclusive. Brace members 20 are preferably provided between each of the pairs of legs 10 to 16 to properly rigid ify the construction. The applicator box or fountain comprises a body member 24 adapted to be secured on the top 18 and preferably secured thereto by suitable means, such as screws, which will extend into the apertures 26 in the top member 18. Preferably, suitable fasteners such as the screws 28 will extend through apertures 29 in the frames 18 and apertures 30 and 32 in the bottom member 24. End members 34 and 36 are secured in sealing relation adjacent the ends of the body' member 24 by any suitable means, such as the fasteners- 38 which extend through apertures 40 in the bottom mem-' to the end members 34 and 36 with the bottom 52 of the front member 42 spaced sufilcien-tly from the member-24 so that a strip of roofing material may be readily passed between the bottom edge 52 of the front 42 and the bottom member 24. A back member 56 is likewise secured to the ends 34 and 36 by suitable fasteners 58 extending through apertures 60 in the back member 56. The bottom edge 62 of the back member 56 is likewise spaced from the bottom member 24 to provide a longitudinally extending slot 66 which is oppositely spaced from the front slot 68.

A doctor blade 70 is placed within the fountain member and is provided with suitable fasteners, such as the bolts 72, which extend through vertical slots 74 in the back plate 56 and secured by means of wing nuts 76 so that the doctor blade is vertically adjustable with respect to the back member 56 to adjustably control the opening 66.

A pair of standards 80 and 82 are mounted on the rear portion of the top member 18 and have bifurcated tops '84 and 86 for supporting a center bar 88 adapted to support a roll of strip material, such as a roll of felt roofing.

Brackets 90 and 92 are mounted on the legs 10 and 12, respectively, and a cutter shaft 94 is rota-tably mounted therein and a plurality of knife holders 96 are mounted therein so that cutting blades 98 may be secured therein by'means of suitable fasteners such as the set screws 100. A hand lever 102 is applied to the end of the shaft 94 so that the cutter blades 98 may be rotated into or out of transverse relation with respect to the slot 66 so that the sheet material coming through the slot 66 may be slit as desired.

In the operation of the device according to the invention, a roll of suitable strip material, such as felt roofing or the like, is placed on the bar 88 and the end 112 is extended through the slot 68 and outwardly through the slot 66 and any suitable coating material, such as paint, asphaltic coating, cement or the like may be placed in the fountain and the doctor blade 70 will be adjusted to provide the desired clearance between the surface of the strip material and bottom of the doctor blade so that a thin even coating of the coating material will be applied thereto. If desired, .the blades 98 will be adjusted to any desired position to provide strips of any desired Width and the material will be drawn through the applicator so that the coating will be applied thereto and extended over the points of the knives 98 so that the material will be cut into any desired width strips for application to the roof.

It will thus be apparent that the present invention provides a convenient device for applying any suitable coating to strip material and for trimming the strip material to strips of any desired width.

Agcoating; applicator comprising an elongated hottom member, upstanding end members mounted on said bottom member, front and back members secured on said end members, said front and back members terminating in spaced relationdo said bottom member to provide front and back slots adapted for the passage of strip material through said applicator, a doctor blade adjustably mounted on said back member whereby said back slot may be varied, means for supporting a roll of sheet material adjacent said front slot, a cutter support mounted adjacent said back slot, a cutter rotatably mounted on said support and extending across said back slot, a plurality of cutter blades adjustably mounted on said cutter, and means for rotating said cutter to move said cutter blades into and out-of alignment with said back slot.
