To all whom it may concern .Be it known that I, GEORGE F. SARGENT, of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, haai-ve invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid- Bedstends; and I do hereby declare that the following is e. full, clear, and exact description thereof.

This invention relates to i certain improvements on that for which Letters Patent were granted to William S. Groff under date of July 29, 1879, No. 218,016; und it consists in certain novel details of construction, arr-ungexnent,"nnd combination, as hereinafter more particularlydescribed, end pointed out in the claims.

The bedsteod is constructed with side rails,

The section B2 is rigidly attached to the side rails, A. -The section'B is hinged to the section B2, so that it can .be raised und lowered in order to change the occupant from 'a recumbeut to an .upright position, and vice versa.. The section .l5s is hinged to the rigid section B2, and the section'B* is hinged to the section B3. The section B supports the portion of `the body ot' the occupant above the hip-joints, the section B3 the portion between the hip-jointsand ltn'eejoints, 'and the seotion B4 the portion below the kneejoint s. The sections B and B3 in ay be provided with removable portions, and the section Bit may lbe divided longitudinally, as shown and described in the potent before referred to. The section B is provided with a. pillow or head Y rest, B, which has its lower edge hinged to the other portion, so that it may be inclined at an angle with relation therclo. At each end ol' this pillow or head-rest is a curved slotted ber, b, extending downward from its under side, and enge-ging with'a. thumb-screw, b2, in the side piece of the section, by whichmeans the pillow or head-piece is held in position et different angles. e

This coupling is formed with two pivots, o e, extending in opposite directions, oud two perforated lugs, e2 c2, at right angles to seid pivots. By this construction a. universal joint is formed. When the vsheft C is turned in one direction the nuts c c travel to` ward the middle of the shaft, carrying with them the lowerl ends of the rods D D, and thus causing the rupper ends of said rods to elevate the section B. When the shaft C is turned in the' opposite direction the nuts e c travel toward the ends'of the shaft, thus onus* ing the upper ends of the rods D D to descend and lower the section B. In this invention the section B3 is raised and lowered by means of a screv`vshaft, G, and rods H H, arranged and operating in a similar manner to those just above described. By this means the knees ofthe patient may be raised above the level of the hip-joints either in connection l with the raising of the section B or independentlythereof, as may be desired.l The section B4 is provided. with a removable foot-rest con-v sisting of a cushion, J, having pins i, for engagement with sockets in thb frame of the section. The sections B B3 are provided with removable and adjustable arms, similar to the arms of a chair. These arms K ar'e provided with pins k2, for engagement withsockets in the frame'of the section B, and'pins k3, for engagement with sockets in the fra-meuf the sec'- tion'B3. Said pins' are connected tothe arms by pivots or hinge-joints, so as to allow the arms to adjust themselves to the different positions of the sections. I

The upper-ends of the posts A3 are conected by rods-a, the ends of which pass into slots or mortises in the posts, and are secured by wedges a2. On the tops of the side rods, a, rests a bar, a3, bed. On the top of this bar a3, and on the rod which connects the two foot-posts, rest two bars, L L, the ends of which are transversely grooved to fit said bar and rod, and are provided with thumb-screws l, for holding Each of the bars L is slotted for nearly its entire length, and in each slot work three screw-eyes, M, provided with thnmb-nuts m, for holding them in place in different positions. To each ofthe screw-eyes is attach ed the upper end of acord, m3, the lower end of which is attached to'a cradle for holding the leg of the occupant ot the bed. This cradle is made in two parts, N N2, hinged together at their contiguous ends to correspond with the kneejoint of the patient, so that the leg may be held either straight or bent at any desired angle. By means of the twol bars L L provision 'is made for. expanding or contracting the curvature of the cradle, and thereby regulating the pressure upon snit the convenience of the patient by moving said bars farther from or nearer to each other.

To the two i'oot-posts of the bedst'ead is at tached a bar, P, the 'ends of which are forked, so as to grasp the posts. In each fork are sawed two kerfs, p p, so as to give a-certain degree of elasticity tothe branches of the fork. Through the portion 0f the fork in which the kerfs are located passes a thumb-screw, S, provided with a right-hand thread for engagement with one branch and a'left-hand thread for engagethe leg to are firmly running transversely of thel ment with the other branch of the fork, so that by turning the thumb-'screw in one directionthe branches of the fork are drawnto- Lward each other and' made lto clamp the post, and by turning it inthe other direction the fork is loosened, so that the bar may be raised or lowered. By this means provision is made for adjusting the bar to any desired height on the posts.

A rod, V, is arranged with its ends resting in these grooves and notches, so as to support the leg-sections B4. By changing the position ofthe rod to the different notches the sections supported in dii'erent positions.

0n the top of the bar P is jonrnaled aroller, W, which is 'secured to thelower end of the cradle-section N2, and over which passes a cord, w, provided with a weight, wz. By this means provision is made for balancing the leg and foot of the patient at any desired positiony above thelevel of the body.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire .to'secure by'Letters Patent, is

1. The hinged section B4, provided with rods V, in combinationwith the posts A3 and rails A, provided with notched grooves T, substantially'as shown and described.

2. The side rails and vstatioiiary lsection B2, secured thereto, in combination with the hinged sections B B3 and vactuating mechanism, and the arms K, provided with hinged supports'k2 k3, movably secured as described.

3. 1n combination with the hinged two-part. cradle N N3, the laterally-adjustableslotted bars L, provided with set-screws l andthe supporting-bars a o3, and the cords m2, substantially as shown and described.

4. The combination of the adjustable bar P, the roller W, and weighted cord w, the posts A3, and cradle-section N2, 'substantially as shown and described. t

5. The combination of the adjustable -bar P, the roller R, and weighted cord 7', the posts A3, and hinged'section B, substantially as shown and described.
