JAMES RESSEGIEU, OF CLEOPATRA, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO LEWIS WATSON, OF SAME PLACE. Y
CORN-PLANTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,382, dated March 20, 1883.
Appncauon nien May 27,1882. or@ modem To all whom it may concer-n:
Be it known that I, JAMES REssEeIEU, of Cleopatra, in the countyv of Mercerand State ofMisscurhhave invented a new and Improved Corn-Planter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter described. l
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specilication, in which my improved corn-planter is represented in perspective view.
A represents the sides of a rectangular frame, and B the ends, said frame being mounted on the axle C, near the rear end, and at the front being supported partly by the harrows D, and partly by the counterbalance of the driver upon the seat E, located a" little back of the axle C.
The harrows D are attached to the standards F of a cross-bar, Gr, arranged'to shift vertically in the clips H, attached to the front cor ners of the frame A B, and said cross-bar is connected by rod I with the arm J of a rockshaft, K, mounted on standards L, and having a lever, M, extending back to the drivers seat, where it is arranged to be set higher low, according to the required set of the harrows, by the lever N and an adjusting-pin, O. The standards F also carry drill-openers P, for making the drills or furrows inwhich the corn is dropped.
Q represents the seedhoppers, in each of which is a rotary dropper, R, each having two pockets, S, in which the corn is received from the bottom of the hopper, to be dropped when the pockets pass the opening T below, wherein there is a bottom dropper consisting of the valve V, iixed on pivots W, to be opened by the tappets X on the rotary dropper, and closed by a spring, Y,
The rotary droppersare mounted on the shaft a, which may be worked by the parallel rods b and cranks d, connected to the cranked axle C, or by a check-rope stretched across the eld and around pulleys e fon stud-arms h, and over` the sprocket-wheel g on the shaft a, of the droppers. When the check-rope is used the connecting-rods b will be detached. 5o
The truckwheels A are iitted loosely on the axle C, and connected for turning it by clutches i, to be shifted by the hand-leverj at the drivers seat, said lever being suitably connected to the clutches by bars or rods k, as requiredV 55 for that purpose.
The check-row markers consist of the pointed ends m of blocks n, litted on arms p of the dropper-shaft a, so as to slide toward and from the shaft, and provided with springs q to 6o thrust the points out and cause them to mark in the ground. The springs allow the points to yield when striking a hard substance and pass over it.
In practi'cethe drivers seat will be attached 6 5 so that it can beshift-ed along the frame, as may be desired, to adjust it for balancing the machine. Y
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 7o Patent- 1. In a corn-planter, the combination, with the frame A B, of the cross-bar G, ittedadjustably in clips H, standards F, narrows l),
and the drillop`eners P, connected at one end 7 5 to the said standards, and enlarged and made scoop-shaped at their lower ends, andarranged to Work between the wings of the harrows, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a corn-planter, the combination, with the cross-bar G, fitted adj ustably in the frame A B, and carrying the harrows D, of the upright I, the liftingbar J, shaft K, standards L, lever M, and a triangular or inverted-V- 85 shaped lever, N, capable of adjustment by a key or pin, O, engaging apertures in a legof the drivers seat E, as set forth.
JAMES RESSEGIEU.
