Application January 28, 1953, Serial No. 333,779 i 1Claim. cane-51 This invention relates to end gates of truck bodies par- 7 ticularly where the end gate is hinged at thebottom and swings outwardly, and in particular an end gate that is adaptedto swing from both the bottom and top.
Thepurpose of this invention is to provide an improvedxend gate. for trucks wherein pivot pins in the lower end of the end gate are adapted to be retracted and apin extended through the upper end of the gate is adapted to provide a pivotal connection permitting the lower end of the end gate to swing outwardly with the pivot pins retracted.
In numerousinstances it is desirable to have the lower 2 V pivotally mounted at the lower end and moved outward- 1y to a horizontally disposed position.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal section similar to that shown 7 in Fig. 4 illustrating the improved end gate of this invention whereby the gate is shown in an outwardly extended position with the lower end free and withv the upper end pivotally mounted on the ends of the sides. of
end of an end gate of a truck swing outwardly instead of V the upper end and with this thought in mind this invention contemplates means for pivotally mounting the upper end of an end gate on the ends of the side walls of a truck body and means for relieving the conventional pivotalmounting at the lower end of the end gate where by either the upper or lower end of the end gate may swing outwardly as may be desired.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for mounting an end gate in a truck body whereby either the upper or lower end of the gate may be released to swing outwardly.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for mounting an end gate in a truck body whereby either the upper or lower end of the gate may swing outwardly without materially changingthe structure of the truck body.
A further object of the invention is to provide an end gate mounting for trucks wherein either the upper or lower end of the end gate swings outwardly in which the mounting is of a simple and economical construction.
slidably mounted in the lower end and actuated by a hand lever whereby the ends of the pins may be retracted or extended outwardly into hearings on the ends of the sides of a truck body and means for temporarily holding the ends of a pin extended through the upper end of the end gate whereby with the pivot pins in the lower ends of the gate retracted the gate is pivotally mounted by the pin extended through the upper end permitting the lower end to swing outwardly.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:
Figure l is an end elevational view showing the improved end gate mounted in the end of a truck body.
Figure 2 is a sectional plan taken on line 2-2 of 7 and in which the parts are shown on an enlarged scale.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section through the rear end of.,the truck body showing the conventional end gate the truck body.

pivot pins in the lower end of the gate.
Figure 7 is a detail showing one of the b'earingelements on the upper ends of the side walls of the truck body and in which the ends of the pin extended through the upper end of the end gate is temporarily held.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved end gate of this invention includes a plate 10 having a roll 11 on the upper end, a roll 12 on the lower end and a pair, of outwardly facing channels 8 and 9, respectively; that are secured'along each of the vertical edges of the end gate plate 10, pivot pins 13 and 14 slidably mounted in the roll 12 on the lower edge ofthe end gate and positioned to extend into bearings 15 and '16 respectively, on vertically positioned angle bars 17 and 18 on the ends of side walls 19 of the truck body, a hand lever 20 for actuating the pivot pins 13 and 14, a stationary pin 21 mounted in the roll 11 at the upper edge of the gate, bearing members 22 and 23 positioned on the members 17 and 18 and positioned to receive the ends of the pin 21,
and'pins 24 and 25 extended through openings, as indicated by the numeral 26 in the bearing members 22 and 23 for retaining the ends of the pivot pin in said members.
The hand lever 20 is pivotally mounted by a pin 27 v on a mounting block 23 on the wall 10 of the end gate,
as shown in Fig. 6 in which the outer end of the pin is supported with a plate 29 and a washer 30 is provided between the plate or bracket 29 and lever. The pin 27 also extends through a flange 31 on the upper edge of the roll 12 and the lever extends through an opening 32 in an inclined section 33 extended from the roll 12 to the flange 31.
The pivot pin 14, at one side is pivotally connected to the lower end of the lever 20 by a pin 34 and the pivot pin 13 which is provided with an upwardly extended end 35 is pivotally connected to the lever 20 by apin 36.
With the hand lever 20 pivotally mounted in this manner and connected to the pivot pins the pins may readily be retracted as desired and in retracting the pins the hand lever 20 is moved from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 to the position shown in broken lines.
The bearings 15 and 16 are secured to the members 17 and 18, preferably by rivets 37 and the bearing members 22 and 23 are mounted in openings in flanges 38 and 391 I ofthe end members 17 and 18, preferably by welding.
With the bearing members 22 and 23 positioned in this manner the ends of the pin 21 are free to slide betweenv flanges 38 and 39 of the bearing members, as shown in Fig.4.
The ends of the rolls 11 and 12 at the upper and lower edges of the end gate 10 are provided with cylindrical bearing elements, as indicated by the numeral 40 thereby providing guides for the ends of the pins.
The pins 24 and 25 are secured in the ends of cables 41 and 42, respectively, and the ends of the cables are also provided with hooks, as indicated by the numerals 43 whereby the free ends of the cables may be hooked to the ends of the end gate to support the gate in a horizontally disposed position, as shown in Fig. 4.
The ends of the cables 41 and 42 are secured to the Patented Apr. 17, 1956 the truck is adaptedtof'swing outwardly from the upper end with the lower end pivotally secured in the frame or to the ends of the side walls of the truck body, or the lower end of the end gate may be released and the upper end pivotally mounted whereby the lower part of the end gate is free to swing outwardly'as illustrated in Fig. 5.
It will be understood that modifications, Within the scope of the appended claim, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
