BENJ'AMINPONs '3 ATTORNEYS United States Patent BOARDING FORM FOR FULL-FASHIONED PANTIES Benjamin Pons, Valdese, N. C., assignor to Alba Hosiery Miiis, Inc., a corporation of Deiaware Application September 20, 1954, Serial No. 457,116
8 Claims. ((12. 223-72) This invention relates to the novel form and shape of a boarding form particularly for use with panties knitted with thermoplastic yarns and, more especially, to a boarding form onto which the panties are placed before entering a suitable pre-boarder or finishing boarder having a steam or hot air heating chamber.
It is a primary object of this invention to provide a boarding form of relatively thin material having a pair of projections on one side thereof for locating the position of the leg holes in a pair of panties, made from a woven or knitted textile material, upon the panties being placed on the boarding form, preparatory to subjecting the panties to heat-treatment.
It is another object of this invention to provide a boarding form of the type described which is adapted to be used on existing hosiery boarding machines and which is easily attachable to and removable from the conveying means associated with the boarding machine.
It is another object of this invention to provide a boarding form for full-fashioned panties of the type described which makes it easy for an operator to place the panties thereon and which insures that each pair of panties boarded on this novel boarding form will be identical in shape upon being removed from the boarding form.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the boarding form for full-fashioned panties adapted to be used with conventional boarding machines and being removed from the conveying means of the boarding machine;
Figure 2 is a front elevation of a modified form of boarding form for use with a small boarding machine, and showing a pair of full-fashioned panties in position on the boarding form preparatoryto being placed-in the boarding machine;
Figure 3 is a somewhat schematic side elevation of a portion of a small boarding machine and showing a plurality of the modified forms mounted on a conveyor for moving said forms into said boarding machine.
Since the upper portions of the two forms of boarding forms, shown in Figures 1 and 2, are identical, the same reference characters will apply to both forms where they are identical. The numeral broadly designates the improved boarding form for full-fashioned panties such as indicated at P in Figure 2. The body of the form 10 is made from a relatively thin and rigid planar or fiat sided material such as aluminum, stainless steel, plastic or the like and may be made from a single thickness of such material or plies of any combination of such materials, as desired.
The form 10 is generally of the shape of a paddle or an oar and has a curved upper edge portion 11 of a relatively large radius as compared to its curved opposite upper corner edge portions 11a. Opposite side edges 11b of the upper portion of the form 10 extend downwardly in substantially spaced parallel relationship,
2,739,743 Patented Mar. 27, 1956 tangent to the curved upper corner edge portions 11a, and the opposite side edges at the medial portion of the form 10 converge in gradual ogee curves 12 defining a waistband-forming portion therebetween. Thus, the straight-edged lower portion of the form 10, whose substantially parallel edges are indicated at 110, is of less width than the upper portion of the form.
Although the upper side edge portions 11b are shown as being substantially straight between the corresponding curved edge portions 11a and 12, these upper side edge portions are preferably convexly rounded on a radius substantially greater than the radius of the upper edge portion 11. It will be noted that edge portions 11, 11a collectively effect a substantially semi-circular or semielliptical configuration to the upper edge of the form 10, and the edge portions 11b extend in substantially parallel relation to the minor axis of said semi-elliptical edge portion.
The lower end of said form 10 may be of any desired configuration and, since the form is shown as being particularly adapted for use with a conveyor-type boarding apparatus, the form 10, shown in Figure 2, is shown having a straight bottom edge 13. The form 10, shown in Figure 1, has an irregularly shaped bottom edge 13, adapted to be attached to the conveying means of a conventional boarding machine, and the lower portion of one side edge is cut at an angle indicated at 11d. Spaced above said bottom edge, in both forms of boarding forms, is a pair of laterally spaced holes or openings 14 which are provided for securing the boarding form 10 to a conveyor 15 of a boarding machine shown schematically at 18 in Figure 3.
A pair of laterally spaced elliptically-shaped projections or ribs 20 are fixedly secured, in any suitable mannor, to one side of the boarding form adjacent the upper edge 11 thereof and adjacent the arcuate opposite corner edge portions 11a thereof. The elliptically-shaped portions 20 are preferably integral with the form It The holes 14 are provided so that the boarding form 10 may be easily secured to or removed from brackets 16 on the conveyor 15 of the boarding machine 18 by means of screws 17 threadably embedded in the brackets 16. It is to be understood that, in order to provide boarding forms for full-fashioned panties of varying sizes it is only necessary to modify the shape of the board 10 to change the distance between the spaced parallel side edges 11]) and 110 and the curved edges 11a and 12 of the boarding form to accommodate larger or smaller panties than those illustrated in Figure 2.
A pair of panties P are shown on the form 10 in Figure 2. Upon securing the proper sized boarding forms on the conveyor 15 of the boarding machine 18, the operator then takes a pair ofpanties P and places them on the boarding form 10. This is done by passing the waistband 21 of the panties over the curved upper edge portions 11, 11a along the edges 11b and the curved side edge portions 12, with the front of the panties on the same side as the elliptical projections 20, until leg openings 22 of the panties P register with and surround the elliptical projections 20 on the front side of the boarding form 10. Since the medial portions of the side edges of the form 10 converge at 12, the panties are then formed to accommodate the waist and hips of the wearer in proper proportions. The elliptical projections 20 on the boarding form 10 insure that the panties P will be located properly on the boarding form 10 each time a pair of panties P is placed thereon, by an operator and it is to be understood that, full-fashioned panties knit of either a stretchable or nonstretchable yarn may be boarded on these boarding forms 10.
Upon placing a pair of panties P on each of the boarding forms 10 along the conveyor 15 of the boarding machine 18, the operator then moves the conveyor 15 along with the boarding form 10 and the panties P into the steam chamber or hot air chamber of the pre-boarder or finishing boarder to thus set the shape of the panties P to substantially that of the boarding forms 10.
It is thus seen that, there has been provided a boarding form for full-fashioned panties which insures that each pair of panties placed thereon by an operator will be positioned on the boarding form in precisely the same position to thereby insure that each pair of panties boarded is identical as to shape when removed from the boarding machine, and wherein the form is of a solid imperforate material of a shape conforming generally to the waist, hips and thighs of the wearer.
In the drawings and specification there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, and al though specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being defined in the claims.
