1 Claim. (Cl. 242-123 This invention relates to a reel or spool of the type usually employed for holding wire or the like.
Heretofore, reels or spools of this type have been made of cylindrical cores or hubs which are provided with projecting tongues at either end, the tongues being adapted to be received in slots formed in discs which are applied to either end of the cylindrical hub, the tongues being then crimped over the slots. In other types the discs have been provided with an annular rib or bead surrounding a central recess and this rib has been crimped over the edge of the cylindrical hub end. In all such types, however, the tongues, ribs, flanges or the like become easily bent or broken and the parts quickly become detached, thereby rendering the reel defective.
It is an object of my invention, therefore, to provide.
a joint wherein there is avoided the use of projecting tongues or of slots, cuts or other perforations in any of the parts.
Another object of my invention is to provide a plurality of metal stampings' which can be assembled to form a reel having enclosed and protected joints.
Another object of my invention is to provide a plurality of metal stampings which can be easily assembled and attached to one another by their own parts.
Other objects of my invention are to provide an improved device of the character described, that is easily and economically produced, which is sturdy in construction, and which is highly etficient in operation.
With the above and related objects in view, my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of parts, as will be more fully understood from the following description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the reel embodying my invention.
Fig. 2. is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an exploded view of the parts showing them in unassembled relation.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, wherein simi lar reference characters refer to similar parts, I show a hub A which comprises a hollow sheet metal cylindrical body 10 having a peripheral bead 12 at either end, which is formed by rolling the edge of the cylindrical wall.
Each end of the reel comprises a flange, generally designated B and each flange consists of a disc 14 having a peripheral head or rolled edge 16. A central opening 18 is provided in each of the discs and intermediate the opening 18 and the bead 16 is provided an annular head 20. The head 20 is concentric with the opening 18 and the bead 16.
Thehub A and the flanges 13 preferably are metal stampings and are held together without nuts, bolts, welding or slots of any kind. Instead, the hub A is made of such a size that the beads 12 coincide with the beads 20 when the hub is in a predetermined position with relation to the flanges B. The beads 12 are then set into the interior grooves formed, by the beads 20 and the beads 20 are, thereafter, pressed or crimped down over the beads 12, holding them in a tight frictional locking engagement. The resultant joint is strong, firm and' water-tight, and the discs 14 are nowhere weakened by any slots or other cuts.
Although rnyinvention has been described" in considerable detail, such description is intended as being illustrative rather than limiting, since the invention may the rolled peripheral bead on each end of said hub being snapped into interlocking engagement with the annular groove in each of said flanges to hold said flanges upon said hub, said hub being the sole connecting means between said flanges.
