W. DONEGAN.
ADJUSTABLE BALCONY.
No. 273.823. Patented Mar.13,1883.
WILLIAM DONEGAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ADJUSTABLE eatoonv.
SPECIFICATION forming part oi Letters Eatent No. 273,823, dated March 13, 1883. Application filed June 9, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DONEGAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in an Adjustable Balcony, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in an adjustablebalconyorsupportforWindow-clean- 111g.
The object of my invention is to furnish a durable, inexpensive, and perfectly-safe device for a balcony or support for the purpose of cleaning windows, 8.50., removable at pleasure from its position in the window, and which can be attached to a window-frame of any width or style of molding, and adjustable at different distances from the inner edge of the window-frame, the balcony itself being removable from the sills attached to the windowframes.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan view of my device in place, with the window-frame shown in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, with the window-frame shown in dotted lines; and Fig. 3 is a view of an ornamental knob, to be referred to hereinafter.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My invention consists in the combination of a removable balcony, B, and rail It, with sills S S, connected together by crosspieces o, c, and c and provided at one end with slots 8, on which work the adjustable supporting-bars D D, connected together by U-formed plates a a, of iron or other suitable material, and secured to the sills S S, and held at any desired point by screws or bolts b, which pass through the slots 3 and plates a a, and are provided with thumb screws or nuts 02, this arrangement allowing these adjustable supportingbars D D to be moved laterally, and thus made capable of attachment to any width of window-frame desired. At one end of each of said supporting adjustable bars D D is a hook or projection, e, which fits into a hole in the inner side of window-frame A A. The balcony B, with rail It, rests on the sills S S, between the cross-pieces c and 0 and is held in place by sliding plates 1), provided with slotted holes f, and secured to the cross-pieces c and c by hand-screws d, and by batons E, secured to the under side of the balcony B, with one end projecting under the cross-piece c Rigidly fixed to the end of the sills S S, under the balcony B, are brackets or braces Gr, made of iron or other suitable material, bent in the shape shown in Fig. 2, having a horizontal part, h, which rests level upon the stone or wooden sill of the window H, and the vertical part h, at right angles therewith, provided with sharp projections or prongs g to catch into the outer edge of the wood of the window-frame A A, this particularconstructionand arrangementof the bracket G affording an additional strength and support to the balcony B upon the window-sill. The balcony B may be readily re moved from the sills S S by looseningthehandscrews (1 and sliding back the plate p. This is done to lessen the weight of my device when being placed in position for, or being removed after, use.
Fig. 3 represents an ornamental knob or pin, which, when my device is not in use, can be placed in the holes of the inner sides of the window-frame A A, thus filling them and preventinganydisfigurationofthewindow-frames, and forming a means for holding back window- -curtains, if desired.
In use my device is attached to the window to be cleaned by raising the lower sash thereof and placing the outer ends of the supporting-sills S S and cross-pieces c and c and the brackets G on the outside of the window-frame A A and drawing the sills S S back against the'frame A A until the sharp points or projections g on the bracket G enter the wood of the window-frame A A. The hooks e on the ends of the adjustable supporting-bars D D are fitted into the holes on the inside of the window-frame A A, and the adjustable supporting-bars D I), being thus brought into 9 proper position, are made fast by placing the U-iormed plates a a over them and secured to the sills S S by the bolts I), passing through the slots 8 in the sills S S and fastened by thehand-screws or nuts 12. The frame-work of my ICO device being thus made secure, the balcony B is placed in position upon the outer end of the sills S S by sliding the projecting ends of the batons E under the cross-piecec and securing the sliding plate p,'by the hand or thumb screws cl, to the cross-piece c. The whole now forms a firm and safe balcony or support, and may be used for cleaning windows or-any other purpose for which a balcony may be needed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The removable balcony B, provided with batons E and rail R, in combination with the sills S S, cross-piece c and cross-piece c, havingplatesp and hand-screws d, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the sills S S, provided with slots 8 s, and brackets G, having sharp points or projections g, window-frame A A, adjustable supporting-bars D D, having hooks e, U-formed platesa a, bolts b,'and hand-screws n, substantially as described and shown.
3. In a removable balcony, the combination of the slotted sills S S, brackets G, having sharp points or projections g, the bars D l), hand-screws n, and hooks e, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a removable balcony, the adjustable supporting-bars D D, having books 6, in combination with U-i'ormed plates at a, having bolts b and hand-screws n, and sills S S, having slots .9, whereby a lateral adjustment is secured and the balcony regulated to the width of any window, substantially as described and shown.
5. In a removable balcony, the brackets G,
having projections g, in combination with sills S S, provided with slots 8, brackets G, having projections g, cross-pieces c, c, and c", sliding plates 11, having slotf, hand-screws d, balcony B, having rail R, and batons E, adjustable snp-' porting-bars D D, having hooks e, U-formed plates at a, bolts 1), and hand-screws n, and window-frame A A, all as arranged, substantially as shown and described.
9. The bracket G. bent of the shape shown in Fig. 2, provided with horizontal part h, resting on the window-sill, and the vertical part h, having projection g, substantially as described and shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two wttnesses.
WILLIAM DoNEeAN.
