To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MORTIMER D. LAW- RENOE, of Marshalltown. in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented a new and improved OarriagePole, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My improvements relate to poles, for carriages, buggies, or similar'vehicles, and have the object to construct a pole more substantial and durable than the ordinary pole, which is made of wood and ironed or braced by iron braces, the extension or socket being divided longitudinally, each section thereof forming a fixture or integral part of a half of the circle and of one of the side braces, substantially as hereinafter more-fully set forth and claimed.

Reference is robe had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate cor- 2o responding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan view of a pole of my improved construction. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same on line m, Fig. 1. Fig.

A is the rear portion of the pole, which is formed of metal. a is the circle.

I) b are side braces.

0 c is the evener, and d is the wood portion of the pole.

The rear portion, A, with the circle a and side braces, b, are formed of metal, preferably malleable iron; but they may be made of 5 wrought-iron or steel, and in two sections bolted together. As shown, theiron portion is divided on the central longitudinal line, and

the two portions are attached together by small cross-bolts e. The outer end of the iron por- 0 tion A' is formed with side plates, ff, and a bottom plate, 9, which form a socket for reception of the wooden pole d, which is attached by bolts i. The eyes 76 k, on the ends of the circle a, may also be ot'wrought-iron,and formed with flanges or arms for their attachment. The 4.5 bottomplate, g, and the side plates,f, may be extended as far forward as desired, even to the extent of making the entire pole of iron to the entire exclusion ofwood, and in that case the top portion from the evener forward would be closed instead of being left open, as shown.

This construction furnishes a pole for vehiole's much more durable than the ordinary Wooden pole, besides being lighter and less expensive. 5 5

The rear portion, A, may be cast, forged, or otherwise formed, either solid or hollow, and in one or more sections.

Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In carriage or buggy poles. the tongue extension or socket A, with its forward end provided with the bottom and side plate extensions,fg, and divided longitudinally, each section thereof forming a fixture or integral part of a half of the circle a and of one of the side braces b, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. In carriage or buggy poles, the tongue extension or socket'A, formed in two sections connected together by the bolts e, one section having internal flanges for the other section to rest on, and each section being formed with a half of the circle aand one brace 12, as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
