Description
Feb. 7, 1956 ROY R. WARREN I (541. 44.x:
United States Patent FIRE-HYDRANT WRENCH Roy R. Warren, Conneaut, Ohio Continuation of application Serial No. 221,068, April 14, 1951. This application November 9, 1954, Serial No. 467,700
1 Claim. (Cl. 8198) This application is a continuation of my copending application Serial Number 221,068, filed April 14, 1951, but now abandoned.
This invention relates to wrenches and more particularly to wrenches for opening fireplugs.
In previous designs of wrenches of the type disclosed herein the parts of the wrench were not so disposed as to crowd the nut being turned into a corner of the opening thereof to prevent slipping of the nut in the wrench.
It is an object of this invention to overcome the above and other defects in the prior fireplug wrenches.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a wrench that is simple in construction, economical to manufacture and simple and efiicient to use.
With the above and other objects in view, thepresent invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, size, proportions, and minor details of construction without departing from the function or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings:
Fig. l is a front elevation of the wrench and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the wrench.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, a wrench has an elongated handle 11 made from flat bar stock. One end of the handle is bifurcated to form a pair of coplanar and integral legs 13. The legs 13 define a pentagon shaped aperture 35 and have nut- engaging faces 14 and 40 and 30 and 31.
A head 62 made up of spaced members 12 is provided and each member has extending centrally therethrough a pentagonal opening 20, said openings being coaxial and adapted to register with the aperture 35 defined by the legs 13. The members are connected by wall 15. Each head member 12 is provided with an integrally formed arm 17 which is provided with a transversely extending opening 18.
The handle 11 is disposed between the members 12 which are swingably connected to the handle by means of a bolt 19 or the like which extends through the handle 11 and through the openings 18. When the handle is thus assembled, either of the legs defining the opening 35 can be swung past the registering openings 20 formed in the members 12 so as to grip a fireplug nut for rotation in either direction.
In operation, it will be apparent that when it is desired to turn a nut on a fireplug, for example, it is only necessary to place the wrench over the nut in such manner that the nut is received through the registering openings and the aperture 35 so that each of the five faces of each of the member openings 20 and each of the four faces of the legs 13 will engage or lie adjacent to one of the five sides of the nut. Thereupon counterclockwise movement of the handle 11 about the bolt 19 as an axis will force the two faces 30 and 31 of the handle aperture against the adjacent faces of the nut while sides 41 and 42 of the coaxial openings 20 engage two other faces of the nut to thereby securely grip the same, the nut being crowded into a corner 34 between faces 31 and 42 by force on faces 30 and 41. Thus, a nut which is partially rounded by having its corners sheared 01f will be forced toward corner 34 and be held positively, it being also apparent that the legs 13 will act in one direction while the head 12 will be acting in an opposite direction insofar as the gripping action of the device is concerned. It will also be apparent that a spanner 12a may be provided on the handle to couple or uncouple a hose or for other convenient purpose.
The foregoing specification sets forth the invention in its preferred practical form but the structure shown is capable of modification within a range of equivalents withoutdeparting from the invention which is to be understood is broadly novel as is commensurate with the appended claim.
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege'is claimed are defined as follows:
A wrench comprising an elongated handle comprising a flat bar widened at one end and bifurcated to form two spaced legs defining a pentagonal shaped aperture, a head comprising two spaced but rigidly connected members, each of said members having an arm formed integrally therewith, said arms being pivotally attached to said handle whereby said handle is swingably attached to said head, and a pentagonal shaped opening in each of said members, said openings being coaxial with respect to each other and registrable with said pentagonal shaped aperture between said legs of said handle to receive a pentagonal nut, whereby a pentagonal nut, when positioned within said registering openings and aperture, can be gripped and rotated by swinging said handle.
