Description
(ModeL) A. G. GARDIIER.
FINGER EXERCISING DEVICE FOR PIANISIS. No. 272,951. Patented Feb. 27, 1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFONS G. GARDNER, OF NEW' ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
FINGER-EXERCISING DEVICE FOR PIANISTS.
SPEGIFIGATICN forming part of Letters PatentNo. 272,951, dated February 27, 1883.
Application filed May 16, 1882.
f all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEoNs G. GARDNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Finger Supporting and Exercising Devices, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to the use of roundwire springs supported at one end by a wire rod on the wrist-strap, and also in the use of books upon the block for fastening the springs to the block when the instrumentis notin use, and for the facility of carryingin the pouch or pocket, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claim.
This device is an improvement upon the device patented to B. Atkins, November 1, 1881, No. 248,980.
The description of my device is as follows, and will be clearly understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a per- Y speotive view of the device as applied to the hand.
A is a block of wood furnishing the base or support of all the other parts, which may be of-any kind of wood, and made as ornamental and finished as may be desired. Beneath this block, and attached to it, is a pad or cushion, B, which may be of any soft material agreeable to the hand, as i'elt, cloth, or other similar goods.
O is a stiff wire passing through the ends of the springs D D, 8w, which are coiled for that purpose, and are free to move upon the wire 0. The ends of wire 0 pass through and secure the ends of the wrist-strap F, which is (Model have loops at the inner end for the insertion of the wire or rod 0. At the other ends of D l) are books, to which are attached the loops or finger-straps E.
'F is the wrist-strap above described.
G G G G are hooks attached to the block A, and are designed for holding down the four spring-wires D D when the device is notin use, so that it can be put into the pocket for transportation.
In former patents the springs for supporting the fingers are attached to the block, and are not so free to move laterally, so as to give relief to the movements of the fingers. In my device the inner ends of the springs D move freely upon the supporting-wire U, and whenever the musician desircs the fingers can have free play laterally.
What I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by LettersPatcntof the United States, is
As an improvement upon the patent of B. Atkins, November 1, 1581, No. 248.980, the exercising device for musicians, consisting of the back A, pad B, springs I),loops E, and hooks G, substantially as and for the purpose described.
ALFONS G. GARDNER.
Witnesses D. 1. DowERs, F. F. TRINOHARD.
