T. B. SYKES.
WAGON TONGUE.
No. 272,794. Patented Feb.20,1883.

NITED STATES Fries.
PATENT TO w. M. menr,
WAGON- OF SAME PLACE.
TONGUE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,794, dated February 20, 1883, Application filed November 12,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS BRIDGEMAN SYKEs, of Mercer, in the county of Mercer and Stateof Pennsylvania, oneof the United States ofAmerica, haveinvented certain newand useful Improvements in Tongues, such as are used for wagons, sleds, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a tongue, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe 1ts construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms part of this specification, and which represents a perspective View of my tongue.
A and N represent the bent or curved part of the tongue, made broad, so as to add strength in both lateral and vertical directions.
2 D is a bolt cast in N, around which an iron strap, E, to hold the double-tree to its place, is pivoted.
F is a bolt extending through the-doubletree 8 and the two sections of the tongue, and
fastened by means of a thread and nut on the lower end.
I is one section of the tongue. The part between the sides K K and the end 0 is grooved, so as to admit I in said groove in such a man- 5 her as to embed one-half of the part placed in said groove. By means of said groove and the two bolts G G, passing through the plate J, and the two sections of the tongue, and provided with thread and nut on the lower end,
the two sections of said tongue are firmly fastened together. I use braces H, extending from thelower end ofG to and through the ends of the roller 0, and fastened there by means of thread and nut on the end of said braces.
B is a lateral part of said tongue, provided 5 with holes near the ends, in which bolts with thread and nuts on the lower end are put and firmly fastened to the roller G, which is attached to the wagon or sled.
It will be seen from the above description that I have a curved tongue-sheath constructed with a broad base, the recessed part K and the parts A N B being formed of one solid piece of metal, and that the rear end of the straight pole I is seated into the recess formed in the said metal portion by means of the bolts G G and F, the latter serving, in combination with a bracing-strap, E, and a stud, D, to secure the double-tree to the tongue.
I am aware that a straight wagon-tongue has been secured into the bifurcated end of a. metal goose-neck section of the tongue having a broad base; but this I do not broadly claim as my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is j The cast-metal goose-neck formed of a broad laterally-spread base,.B, the elevated curved portion A N, the straight portion K, having a recess in it, the tongue I, secured in said recess, the Wrought-iron stud D, castin the curved portions A N, the bracing-straps P, the doubletree S, and the bolt F, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
THOMAS BRIDGEMAN SYKES. Attest:
