Be it known that I, JOHN B. KNOEPFLIN, a citizen of France, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Hangings and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

[5 This invention is a new manufacture, consisting in a fabric-such as paper-having its surface ornamented with a layer of flock combined with mineral scales, or the like, as hereinafter described,

This invention is illustrated in the accompanying. drawings, in which Figure l represents a face view; Fig. 2, a sectional view.

The letter A designates the body of the fab- 2 ric, and B the ornamentation.

In carrying out my invention, 1 take a web of paper or other similar fabric, properly sized and stained in the desired manner, and print thereon with an adhesive substance-such as 0 varnish-a design of the desired character, using for this purpose a proper die or pattern. Then, before the adhesive substance has become dried, I apply to the printed design a layer of flock consisting of powdered wool or other similar material. The flock-layer thus applied having been allowed to dry upon the fabric, and the superfluous material having beenv removed, I coat the surface of the flock with an adhesive substance, which may be of a similar nature to that used for printing the design upon the paper and may be put on by the same die or pattern used' for printing. l

I then immediately sprinkle upon the flock-layer so coated a mass of scales obtained by disintegrating mica or other mineral or any other 5 material possessing a like brilliant luster, a portion of which scales adhere to the flock, forming an incrustation or surface-glazing, and it will be perceived-that a very brilliant effect is thereby produced.

If desired, the flock-layer may be evened by passing the fabric between pressing-rollers or the like. I

The flock, as also the scales, may be applied in one, two, or more colors, and when more than one color is used the first is allowed to dry prior to applying the second color.

I amaware that afabric has been provided with a facing of flock; but in such the flock has not been covered or sprinkled with mica or other mineral scales, and therefore it lacks the brilliant luster provided by my invention.

I am also aware that a fabric has been coated with mica-scales; but in such no flock is first placed on the face of the fabric, and hence it 6 lacks the incrusted and ornamental appearance provided by my invention.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-'- As an improved article ofmanufaclure, a fab- 7o trio-such as paper-possessing the characteristic hereinbefore set forththat is to say, one side of the paper having an attached covering l or layer of flock, such as powdered wool-and the outer surface of such covering or layer of 7 flock having attached thereto disintegrated mica-scales or similar powdered mineral substance, substantially as described.
