CLOCK-ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,012, dated January 23, 1 8
Application filed September 6, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 0RsoN El. WOODWORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbia City, in the county of Whitley and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clock-Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my improvement are to produce an alarm of a more discordant character than is produced in the ordinary manner, to prod nce a double and triple alarm, and also to produce an intermittent alarm. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a general view of my invention with some contiguous parts.
The ordinary springs,driving-wheel,ratchet, click, pinions, posts, and other parts, are most- 1y omitted, as not being essential to an understanding of the distinctive features of my invention.
P represents the lower plate of the alarm, the upper plate being indicated by broken or dotted lines, and the whole alarm being attached to the back of the clock in the usual way.
WV represents the alarm escapement-wheel,
attached to escapement-shaft S in the usual manner, as shown. This wheel is constructed withoutteeth on nearly one-half of its periphery, as from N to N On each side of the escapement-wheel W,
and directly opposite each other, the verges V and V are set, and held in position by the upper and lower plates, these "erges being attached to their respective verge-shafts F and F in the ordinary manner, as set forth.
To the shafts F and F are fastened the ordinary hammer-arms, A and A carrying the hammers H and H, which strike the bells B and B to produce the alarm. The bells are of different sizes and tones. The smaller is placed within the larger, the two being separated by washer'R, and both firmly attached to the clock-frame D, as indicated.
The shafts F and F are provided with alarm drop-levers O, which connect with the clockmovement in the usual manner by means of wires VI.

Operation: The alarm escnpemen t-wheel W, revolving in the direction indicated by the arrow, imparts motion to the verges, thereby causing an alarm on both bells until the point N has passed beyond verge V, when the motion of verge V ceases; but the motion of verge V continues with increased force, because the power of the alarm-spring escapes exclusively through verge V and the toothless portion of the periphery of wheel W is passing verge V. When point N reaches verge V it is again set in motion, and when point N reaches verge V both verges are in motion until point N passes verge V when the motion of the latter ceases and verge V receives the full power of the alarm-spring. Thus, in a single revolution of wheel W-starting from the position showir in the drawing-there is, first, an alarm through both verges and hammers on both bells; second, an exclusive alarm through verge V and hammer H on bell B third, an alarm on both bells; fourth, an exclusive alarm on bell B; or, in other words, the alarm may be described as being effected, first on the small bell, then on both together, and then on thelarge bell. It is apparent that the alarm on both bells together is of very short duration. The discordance, and consequently efi'ectiveness, of this alarm depends largely on the dissonant tones of the bells.
This clock-alarm is cheap and simple in construction, and very efiective in operation.
Iclaim as my invention 1. The combination of an esoapement-wheel denuded of part; of its teeth, and verges arranged, substantially as described, so as to be alternately in contact with the denuded portion of said wheel.
2. The combination of an escapement-wheel denuded of part of its teeth, and verges placed upon opposite sides of said wheel, for the purpose setforth.
