SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,855, dated January 16, 1883 Application filed September 6, 1882. (No model.)

all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARLOW U. S'IAHL, of Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful 5 Improvements in Cultivator-Standard Clamps;

and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap'pertains to make and use the to same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a view of the device complete and attached to a plow-beam. Fig.2 is a view of the plate attached to the under side of the beam, with the set or binding screw for holding the standard; and Fig. 3 is a view of the upper plate.

Myinvention has relation to fastening devices or clamps for securing a standard or cultivatortooth to a plow-beam or drag-bar; and it consists in an improvement upon the cultivator- 2 standard clamp for which Letters Patent of the United States No.252,536 were granted to me on the 17th day of January, 1882. The coupling or fastening device described in the said Letters Patent is composed of two plates 0 of substantially the same shape as the plates 0 and D, (shown in the accompanying drawings,) which are made, by preference, of malleable cast-iron, but which may, if desired, be cutor stamped from metal plates. In the up- 5 perplate, C, is, as in the present case, made an opening, I, of such a size and shape as to exactly fit the standard or tooth A, and also two longitudinal slots, F F, to receive the bolts G G, which clamp it to the beam B. The under plate, D, has also an aperture, 1, to fit the standard or tooth A, and has two lateral or cross slots, H H, to receive the fastening-bolts G G. This part of plates 0 and D does not difler from that shown in my Patent No. 252,536,

.4 5 and is for the same purpose-viz., to provide for the standard, by simple and convenient means, a vertical adjustment, a forward and back adjustment of the pitch, and also the lateral inclination of the standard; but in Patent No. 252,536 the upper plate, 0, is provided with a lug which receives a set-screw adapted to bind against the back part of the tooth or standard A, whereas by my present improvement thetop plate is left plain or smooth; but the under plate has a lug, L, at its front side, through which is inserted a binding-screw or set-screw, E, which bears against the front side of the tooth. Several important ad vantages result from this change in construction of plates 0 and D and from the changed location of the set-screw. Where hollow metal standards are used formed of steel plate bent into proper shape (a construction shown in the drawings, which we prefer to use on account of its lightness, combined with great strength and stiffness) a much shorter screw may be used. The screw being shorter will take a firmer hold, and is notso liable to bend or break. The vertical adjustment of the standard is effected with greater ease, and the point of bear- 7:) ing of the screw on the standard will be nearer the shovels and nearer the point of resistance.

Having thus described my improvement, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The cultivator-standard clamp or coupling composed of the sliding plate 0, encircling the standard A, and provided with the longitudinal slots F F, the plate D, having cross-slots RH, and provided with the lug L and bind- 8o ing-screw E, bolts G G, and beam or drag-bar B, constructed and combined substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
