SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,498, dated January 9, 1883, Application tiled May 17, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, JAsoN SMITH, ot Rockland, in the county ot' Plymouth and State of ll'lassachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Trimming, Channeling, and Grooving the Soles of Boots and Shoes, ot which the following is aspecitication.
This invention consists of mechanism, fully described below, whereby the sole is trimmed, channeled, and grooved at one and the saine operation.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is a vertical section of the machine, not showing the carrier-block. Fig. 2 is ahorizontal section ofthe machine on lille x a', Fig.Y

A represents the frame, A' being the hollow standard or supporting portion.
Loosely placed in the frame by means of its hub B' is the gear-wheel B, adapted to be engaged by the gear-wheel b, tixed to a horizontal shaft having bearings at a' a' in thearin a, extending from the frame. Fixed upon this shaft is also the clutch b', and loosely vplaced upon it is the pulley b", connected with the power.
Ashipping mechanism forpressingtheclu-tch b' against the pulley b" to start the machine,
and for removing the same for stopping it, consists of the lever c, having its lower end pivoted to the arm a, its upper end provided with a sleeve, c', encircling the shaft to which the clutch is fast, and connected by a spring, c", to the arm c. The spring ot' course holds the clutch away from the pulley b". The upper end of the lever c is connected by the link d to the bent lever d', pivoted at d",and having `two longitudinal slots, C', and a transverse slot, C". (See Fig. 4.) In the longitudinal slots lie the studs or projections D, fixed to or integral with the gear-wheel B, and provided with extensions D', fitting into grooves 0"' on the under side ot' the slot, to insure rigidity. (See Figs. l and 4t.) Into the transverse slot U" extends the stud or block E, (lying longi tudinally in the slot,) swiveled eccentrically on the top of the shaft E' or on the wrist-plate E", fixed on said shaft, which is adapted to be turned by a hand-wheel, F, (reached through an opening in the standard A',) which is held in any desired position by means of set-screws F', passing through said standard. A block, Gr, slotted to correspond with the slots C', lies immovably on the cam C, and is provided with a rib or shoulder, G', 'for the purpose below specified.
Upon the block G is the pattern-rest H, se-
cured to the projections orpattern-rest supports D by means ot' screwsH', and supporting the pattern f. The cam is provided with a groove, `r/,on its upper side. W'hen thegearwheel B is rotated, the stud E, lying on the stationary wrist-plate'E" and in the slot O"in the cam, produces by the aid of the projections D, which extend into the slots U', a longitudinal movement ot' the cam relative to the gearwheel B asA the cam rotates with said wheel. This longitudinal movement is a reciprocating one, and the length of the throw at a given point is determined by the position ot' the stud E in the slot C". When the stud is nearest the pattern-rest support or projection D next the knives as it passes them as the cam rotates, the throw is greatest and the largest sole lnay be operated upon when it is farthest from it at that point the throw is the least, and the smallest-sized soles maybe operated upon.
Swinging horizontally from the arm A" of the frame is an arm, h, the outer end ot' which IOO is provided with a ledge, h', which lies under the edge or shelf G on the bloek Gr, and assists to hold the tool-holder and knife-carrier block in place while at work.
Swiveled in the arm is a plate or disk, I, to which is rigidly secured a flat lever, l', which rotates with thedisk I. Projecting downward from thisdisk I (which with the lever l makes practically en e lever) are two rolls, J, which extend into the cam-slot 11. The parts I l J, together with the frame K, pivoted at K to the lever l, and the curved guide-plate k, form the knife-carrier block. The knife-carrier or tool-holder L is pivoted to the knit'e carrier block both above and below the knives-viz., at the point l, below the knives, directly to the carrier-block K, and at the point l to the extension or arm It', removable by turning a thumbscrew, k", so as to remove the tool-holder, ifdesired. rllhe tool-holder or knifecarrier L carries three knives-viz., the trimming-knife M, adjustablysecured in a groove, lvl/,in thelower portion of the holder, and a channeling-knife, N, and grooving-knife O, both adjustably secured to an adjustable foot, P. rlhe trimmingknife M is adjustable horizontally by means ot' the screw l. The channeling and grooving knives are adjustable relatively vertically by means ot' screws 2 and 3, respectively, which hold them to the foot P, and the gage m, also secured to the foot, is adjustable by means ot' the screw 5. The footl isadj ustable vertically by means of the screw 4, and is adapted to slidel vertically on the foot holder or support u, and said foot-holder a is adjustable horizontally in the tool-holder L by means of the nut or bolt 6. The foot l" (and knives carried therein) is adapted to be lifted away from the work by the foot-lifter R, which, thus doing, compresses a stiff spring, o', whose lower end lies in the oot and whose upper end rests in the frame r', integral with the foot-holder n. As the cam is rotated the rolls J follow the track of the groove g, and the three knives above mentioned trim, channel, and groove the sole S at one and the same opera-tion by means otl the mechanism above described. The pivoting ol' the tool-bolder both above and below the knives to the carrier-block makes it very stiff and irm during its work. A spring-bolt, t, is held forward by the spring t in the barrel t" against the tool-holder behind the knives, as seen in Figs. 2 and 10, to hold them, with suitable tension, to their work. A pull-back lever, 7, provided with a catch, S, is for the purpose of drawing back the tool-holder when the patte-rn is being changed and holding it back by means of the hook 9. When the machine is in operation the lever 7 lies back in a rest, 10, against the barrel t, as in Figs. 3 and 10.
T is a trip-dog, projecting down far enough from the lever 11, pivoted at 12 to the frame A, to reach the foot-lifter R. The lever 11 is connected by the link 13 to the lever 14, pivoted at 15 to the frame, and having its forward or free end bent up, so as to be struck by the projection Bl upon Athe hub B of the gear-wheel B. The machine starts at the heel (which is to be trimmed only)withthe foot-lifter R raised, (as in Fig. 3,) in order to draw up the grooving and channeling knives. When the cam has rotated sufficiently to turn the heel the projection B strikes the free end of the lever 14, bearing it down, and hence forcing the trip-dog T down, so that it strikes the foot-lifter R, which drops the grooving and channeling knives onto their work, and the remainder ofthe sole is operated upon by all three knives. (See Fig. 5.) The spring 16, secured to the link 13 and frame, draws the levers and dog back to their original position'. Vhen the cam has completed its rotation and one-sole has been operated upon, the machine is automatically stopped by reason of the projection 17, which is placed on the under side ot' the cam in the position shown in Figs. 3 and 5, and which strikes the lever 1S, pivoted at 19, and connected by a link, 20, with the latch e, thus releasing the wheel b from the clutch b', as before described.
U is the clamp for hol-ding the sole down upon the pattern. The clamp is supported by the bar V, swiveled on the vertical rod V', surmounted by an adjustingsnut, V", which is placed above the cross-bar of.' the frame V'. rlhe lower end of this frame Vl is connected by a knuckle-joint, \V, (pivoted at 21 to the frame A,) to a chain, W', which passes over rollers W to the treadlc W at the lowerend of the frame-support A. To press the clamp U down on the sole S, bear down the treadlc VV, which, by means of the knuckle-joint W, frame V', and bar V, swiveled on the rod V', will accomplish the result. The side bars of the frame V' are swiveled on thc top or cross bar ot' the same. (See Figs. 1, 3, and 5.) The spring 22 releases the sole when pressure is removed l'rom the treadle. Provision for soles ol" dill'erent thicknesses is made in the adjusting-nut V", which should be so situated as to keep the knuckle-joint always in a position to exert power when the treadle is down. The clamp U is held in the swiveled bar V by means ot' the slides 23,provided with openings 24, which are made to coincide with openings 25 in the bar V, when the springs 26 are compressed. \Vhen in the above position the bent pins 27 on the clamp (see Fig. 1) are thrust into the coinciding holes 2-1 and 25 and the springs 26 released. The bar V and slides 23 then assume the position seen in Fig. 8, the holes not coinciding, and the pins 27 on the clamp U are securely held.

To operate the machine, place the sole S on the pattern f, press down the treadle W" to force the clamp U upon the sole, and press the lever d down to start the machine. As the cam rotates the heel is rst trimmed by thel knife M; then the dog T is pushed down by the projection B on the gear-wheel, thus tripping the foot-lifter R and dropping the channeling and grooving knives N 0 upon the sole. The remainder ofthe sole is then trimmed, channeled, and grooved at once. A machine has heretofore been provided with a longitudinally-moving bed or pattern carrying the sole, and with a pivoted carrierframe carrying devices for molding, rounding, and channeling such sole, the said carrierframe being arranged to move aroundthe bed or pattern to perform the f'unctions stated; but such is not myinventiou, and is not claimed by me.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The co'mbination of a supporting-frame, A, a pattern, f, rotated by mechanism on the frame, the pivoted carrier-block K, the knifecarrier L, pivoted to the carrier-block, and the knives M, N, and 0, secured to the knife-carrier for trimming, channeling, and grooving the soles of boots and shoes at one operation, substantially as described.
2. In a sole-machine, the combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, of a pattern,f, rotated by mechanism on the supporting-frame, a pivoted carrier-block, K, and a tool-holder, L, carrying trimming, channel-ing, and grooving knives M, N, 'and 0, and swiveled or pivoted to the carrier-block at points both above and below the knives.
3. In a boot and shoe sole machine, the combination, with a pattern, of a swiveled toolholder, the trimming, channeling, and grooving knives M, N, and 0, all secured to and carried by the tool-holder and operating mechanism,substantially as described, whereby the sole Will be simultaneously trimmed, channeled, and grooved, as set forth.
4. The combination of a supporting-frame, A, an attached arm, A, a swinging arm, h, supported by the latter, the pivoted carrierblock K, provided with the levers I I', and curved plate k, the tool-holder` L, pivoted to the carrier-block, and provided with knives and the spring-bolt t, and barrel t', substantially as described.
5. The combination of the tool-holder L, provided with the foot P, and foot-lifter It, and the frame A, provided with the trip-dog T, connected by a system of levers, substantially as shown, with said frame, and adapted to be lowered by the contact of said levers with a projection, B, on the under side of the gearwheel B as it rotates with the cam and pattern, substantially as described.
6. The combination of the gear- Wheel B, providedwith thc studs and extensions D D adapted to support the pattern, the shaft E', provided with the Wrist-plate E and stud E, and the sliding cam C, provided with the longitudinal slots G and transverse slot C, and slot g, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. The combination, with the clamp U, provided With the bent pins 27, of the swiveled bar V, provided with the spring-slides 23, having openings 24, for the purpose described.
9. In a sole-machine, the combination of the cam C, its support, and a pattern,f, said cam having a longitudinal reciprocating movement in the same line on its support, and arranged to 4rotate with said support, substantially as described.
