SAWING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 27,024, dated January 31, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KiNesLEY R. OLM- sTED, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sawing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of ref erence marked thereon, in which- Figure l is ageneral perspective view of a sawing machine, with my lmprovements attached. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the improved inclined plane, the dotted lines showing the rising of the plane as the end of the set lever passes, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the eccentric bearing or journal box of the change friction gear wheel, for changing from feed motion of carriage to gig motion, the same letters having reference to like parts in each of the figures.
The nature of my improvement consists in so constructing the inclined plane of the self sett-ing apparatus (as heretofore patented by me on 10th November, 1857), that when the set lever on the set rod passes backward with the gigging motion of the carriage, the lower end of said plane rises and allows the fixed arm withroller at the end of the set lever to pass freely under it, after which the end of said plane drops to its proper position for operating the set lever, so as to give the desired set to the log, as the feed motion of the carriage again commences. This mode of constructing and operating the inclined plane, allows the knuckle joint and its spring as used at the end of the set lever (shown in patent above referred to) to be dispensed with, and there may be used in its place an unbending arm and roller, aiiixed to the end of the set lever, which forms a more exact and certain self setting apparatus. Also in combining and arranging a friction roller, and slot-ted plate, with a setting scale, and hand or manual setting apparatus attached to and operating the set rod, in the manner and for the purpose hereinafter more fully shown. Also, in combining with a clutch lever and the driven friction gear wheel, as arranged on the carriage shaft, for feeding the carriage up to the saw and gigging the same back, an eccentric. bearing or journal box, constructed and arranged substantially as shown in Fig. 3 for the purpose of more cerf tainly and quickly throwing said friction gear wheel in or out of contact with the drivers of said friction wheel; also in com` bining with the saw mill frame an oifto describe the construction and operation of the same, including a descriptionlas far as is necessary, of the ordinary'sawing mills in use, in order to show clearly the connec tion of my improvements with the same.
A A is the carriage; B, B, the head and tail blocks, having the sliding racks C, C, sliding in grooves in the usual manner.
D is a set rod, provided with pinions at each end, which gear into the sliding racks.
E is a self setting lever arranged on the set rod so as to have its outer end move freely up or down, the extent of downward movement being fixed by a rest (a). This set lever is provided with grippers or dogs for operating on the set rod, in the usual known manner, but the outer end of said set lever, instead of having a knuckle joint as heretofore used, is provided with a fixed arm, with friction roller (a) which, as the feed motion of carriage commences, travv erses up the surface of the inclined plane F, and by means of the grippers or dogs of the set lever acting on the set rod, causes the set rod to revolve partially, thereby operating the racks so as to give the required set to the log. Said inclined plane has its upper end made with a bearing or stud (c) (provided with a set screw (e) which slides up or down in slot (d) in the standard G, for the purpose of adjusting the height of said plane to the amount of set required for the log. Said standard having a graduated scale as seen in Fig. 2, to regulate the height of inclined plane, for a certain amount of set of the log. This mode of attaching the inclined plane to the standard allows the lower end of said plane to rise as the arm and roller of the set lever passes under it on the reverse or back motion of the carriage as shown Vbydotted lines in Fig.' 2.
I-I is a hand sett-ing lever, constructed, operating and attached to the set rod in-the usual manner. To the outer end of this lever is aflixed a link (f), connecting with the Weighted lever I. Arran ed upon the saW frame J J is the scale Upon this scale is arranged a slotted plate (h), made adjustable by means of the set screvv (il). At the endof this plate is aiixed in a vertical position, the friction roller against Which the log rolls When set for sawing.
YThis combination of the friction roller,
slotted plate, scale, Weighted lever, andl set lever, is for the purpose of obtaining accurate and expeditious hand setting of .the log- When such mode is Wanted or preferred.
K is the driven friction gear Wheel, keyed to the carriage shaft L, Which has the pinion (lo) meshing into the rack M, aliixed to the carriage, for the purpose ofv Vgiving feed motion to the log, and reversing or gigging back the same when a cut is made. This Wheel K has an eccentric bearing or journal box N, as shovvn in Fig. 3 in which the journal (l) of carriage shaft L runs, so that when the clutch lever O is shifted either back or forth by hand or automatically; it so operates u on the eccentric journal box and journal Z), so as to bring either of the drivers I), or Q, in contact with the driven Wheel K, thereby giving feed motion to the carriage and log, or reverse or gig back the same When desired.
The automatic feed or gig motion of the carriage, is produced in the usual manner by means of trips aixed to the carriage, and striking upon the usual'arrangement of devices for effecting that purpose.
Upon the standards R, R, of the saw frame J, J, are arranged the offsetting plates S, S, having slots or yokes (m, am) at their outer ends, the lower ends of said standards are so constructed as to, slide in slots or grooves (n n) made in the bed plates T, T, of saw frame. Within the slots or yokes (m, m,) are arranged and Worked the eccentrics, (0, o) the eccentrics turning upon pins, (p p) rmly fixed in the bed plates T T. The eccentrics have levers (g, g,) projecting outward from their under sides,rby means of Which they are operated. The ends of said levers are connected by connecting rod U, to the clutch lever O, so that the olf set apparatus is operated either by hand or automatically,-for the purpose of throwing the saw off fromY the log, in order not toY scratch the saw or mar the lumber, during the gigging back of the carriage. This ofi-V setting apparatus, may be so connected to the clutch lever by means of the connecting rods, so as to offset only the saW end of the saW frame from the log for single cut mills, and for double cut mills, to offset alternately each end of the savv frame, or the connecting rods 'may be so connected to the clutch lever, as to give an even lateral offset to the Whole saw frame when desired.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination of the friction roller gj) and slotted plate (it), With the scale g), hand lever I, set lever H, set rod D, and sliding racks C C, arranged and operating substantially in the manner and for the purposes as herein specified.
2. I also claimy the combination of the eccentrics (o o) and offsetting plates S S; With the bed plates T T, connecting rod U, and clutch lever O constructed and operating for the purposes substantially as herein described.
