SPECIFICATION forming To alt whom it 'may concern.-
Be it known that I, Asa G. GOLDING, a citizen ot' the United States, residingi at `New York city, in the county ot' New York and State ot New York, have invented certain new and useful i'ull, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
- My invention relates to improvements in pepper, 85e.; and the object is to furnish and construct a caster or bottle, and also'a pulverizer, that. isl non-metallic or non-corrosive, so as to prevent any articles-such as salt, pepper, or other articles-trom acquiring a bad taste or becoming' discolored. y
The invention consists in a lining ot' glass, porcelain, china, or other vitreous .material for cellar or spice-box or bottle. It also consists in a pulverizer made 4of metal covered Ior enameled with glass, porcelain, china, or other vitreous material; and it. also consistsin the construction andarran gement of certain parts, as w-illbe` more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the lettersot' reference marked there- Like letters refer to like parts in the differcntiigures of the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved saltcellar or spice-box. Fig. 2 is a verticalcrosssection ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the lining tor the body and cap. Fig. 4 is aside View of a modified i'orm of salt-cellar or spice-box. Fig. 5 is a vertical cross-section of the same. Fig. .6 is a detail view of a pulverizer. Figs. 7 and 7a are modifications of' the same. Fig. 8 is a plan view of Fig. 5 with the cover removed.
In the drawings, A represents the body or' covering;h for a salt-cellar or spice-box or bottle, of any suitable metal or. material, which is lined with a lining, B, of china, glass, crystal, porcelain, or vitreous material, having near its upper end a flange, b, bywhich it is held in place when in position. In the upper edge of the lining are arranged two recesses or grooves, c, into which the ends of a cross-bar, d, of a pulverizer, D, tit. This pulverizer can be of any suitable shape and sizeaccording to circumstances. and it is made ot' a metal covered with glass, china,`porcelain, or similar non-'corrosive material. The cap or top, E, is also made of any suitable metal or material, and is. secured to the main hody by a screwthread, e. It is also provided with a lining of glass, china, porcelain, or analogous material, and has a number of perfor-ations, f, coinciding with similar perforations in the metal top or cover, to permit the salt, pepper, or other substance contained within to pass out through them. The lining for the cap or top has a Bange, g, by which it is held in position when the top is screwed onto the body. The metal body as well as the top may be spnn around the lining, it' desired, and secured in any proper manner.
I have shown different forms of pulverizers in Figs. 2, 5, and 6, in which the pronged piece h is shown loose, so as to slide up and down the pulverizer D. This pulverizer may, however, be made in one piece, and, instead ot' being held in one place by the cross-bar d or forked bar d', it may be made shorter than the .salt-cellar or spice-box or bottle and i placed `bottle can be seen.
The' lining for both the body and cap of the,
salt-cellar or spice-box may be made ot' any suitable metal, n, Fig. 5. and be covered or enameled with glass, china, porcelain, or analogous non-corrosive material, and in a similar manner to the pulverizer, without departing from the spirit ot' my invention.
The main feature of my invention is that the salt, pepper, 85e., contained in the saltcellar or spice-box or bottle does not come in Contact with anything but non-corrosive ma terial, and thereby prevents discoloring of the salt, pepper, 85e., or from acquiring a had taste. i
I am aware that glasscasters with met-al and glass caps havbeen made, and also that pulverizers'have been made of metal or glass, and therefore disclaim such; but,
Having thus described inyinvention, what I Amade of metal covered with glass, china, or
other nonfcorrosive material, substantially as 3. ln a salt-cellar or spice-box or bottle for salt, &c., the pulverizer made of metal covered with glass, china, or other non-corrosive inaterial. substantially as vand for the purpose specified. Y
4. A salt-cellar or spice-box or bottle for salt, &c., consisting of a body, A, and screwcapE, provided with a lining, B, made of glass, china, or other non-corrosive material, secured in place by kflanges b and g, arranged substantially as specified.
5. The salt-cellar or spice-box herein described, consisting` of a metal body, A, screwcap E, having interior glass or non-corrosive lining B, in combination with a pulverizer, D, made of metal covered with glass or other non-corrosive material, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereby aiix my signature in presence of tWo witnesses.
. ASA G. GOLDING. i
