ORLANDO M. POND, OF INDEPENDENCE, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND O. D. JONES, OF SAME PLACE.
BARBED-WIRE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of-Letters Patent No. 270,116, dated Jamm 2, 1883. Application filed October 6, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom 'it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ORLANDO M. POND, of Independence, in the county of Buchanan and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbed-Wire Fences;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the aceompanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a twistedwire fence having two of my improved barbs applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the barbs having one of the spurs twisted, and thus adapted to receive the fencewires. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the barb, taken in a reverse position represented by Fig. 2. 7
bimilar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to barbed-wire fences wherein two twisted wires are used; and the nature of my invention and improvement consists in a barb havin'g angular points, in combination with slots and scores,and with a twisted fence-wire which is adapted to' hold the said barbs-in their place, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.
A A designate two fence-wires, which are twisted for the purpose of affording strength and atthe same timelocking in placethebarbs, which I shall now describe. 1 twist the two wires A A, as shown-in Fig. 1, so that rigidity quadrangular barbs can be rigidly held at given points between the twists of the said wires.
I indicate by B B in Fig. 1 two quadrangular barbs secured into the twisted fence-Wires. This I do in the following manner, reference being had to Fig. 2 for the purpose of illustrating one spur of the barb twisted to receive in the scores or notches c c the fence-wires A A. This view shows three spurs, Z), of the barb flat, and it shows also one spur, b,twisted, and
at its base scores or notches c c are made, which leave wingsd 61. Now, I twistthe pointed sectionso that the quadrangular barb B can be readily applied to the twisted fence-wires,
and then by any well-known clamping instrument the wings .or parts d d can be closed, so
that they are brought into the same plane with the body of the barb. By doing this the barb is applicable to the twisted wires A A, and it is caused to bite the same by closing the two lips or wings d cl upon said wires.
It is obvious that my scored quadrangular barbs may be readily struck from sheet metal, and that they may be with great facility. secured into the twisted fence-wire, as shown in Fig. 1. l
I do not claim broadly as my invention a sheet-metal barb havingradial pointed projections,a eentral hole for receiving diagonal fence-wires, and a slit extending from the edge of the barb to said central hole to allowthe fence-wires to be inserted into the said hole.
Having described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The new article of manufacture-to wit, a
fence-wire barb consisting of a tour-pointed plate having scores or notches c c, and a twisted barb, I), provided with closing wings d 61, constructed and adapted to operatesubstantiall y in the manner described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have aflixed my signature in'presence of two witnesses.
ORLANDO POND. I
