have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bun g-Hole Protectors; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,

and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled iu the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,

My invention has relation to devices for protecting bungs of casks or barrels and for closing the bung-holes after the bung has been removed; and it consists in the improved construction of parts of such a device, which will be hereinafter more' fully described.

On a stud, E, which maybe screwed or riveted into the lip D, is pivoted a spring-steel arm, F, which presses hard against the head .0f the cask or barrel. The stud E may be fastened to the under side of the lip D either by being screwed in, driven through a hole inthe lip, and swaged on the other side, or by being made in one piece with the lip and pass- -ing through a hole in the one end of the arm F, swaged over it to hold it fast, which latter way I prefer, and have shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The outer free end of the arm F forms a disk, G, to the under side of which a disk, H, of leather, rubber, or any other yielding material, is fastened. l

As the simplest and most effectual stopper,

I prefer to use a rounddisk of leather or ru'n- Y ber, and fasten it by driving a rivet, I, through the rubber disk H andthe end G of the'arm, and swaging the end of it on the upper side of the arm. The disk may, hwever, be made in a more elaborate manner, in the same shape as the rubber to certain bottle-Stoppers, adapt` ed to be buttoned over a button fastened to the under side of disk G, or in any other desirable manner.

The under side ofthe lip D, facing the head of the cask, has two recesses,-J J, one on each side, to receive the two bent ends of a steelwire clamp, K. This clamp consists of a piece of steel wire bent in the middle, its two arms running parallel, and having their outer ends bent inwardly at right angles with the arms. The plate C is fastened to the inside, of the chine in such a position that in turning-the arm F on the stud E it will cover the bung or bung-hole with the disks G and H. Whencask, on which it bears heavily by the strength of the spring-steel, the clamp-is removed from the recesses in the under side of the lip and the bent ends introduced on both sides under the arm, when a better hold is afforded for moving it: VWhen the arm is in position the bent ends of the clamp are again slipped into the recessesin the lip, and form a holdl or handle for the'easier handling of the cask, for

which purpose the central portion of it may be covered with leather, wood, or othermaterial. The disks may also be placed over the bung to protect it and to hold a revenue-stamp, where ,such are used, or any label that may be desired to place over the bung.
