3 Claims. (Cl. 74-513) The present invention relates to an accelerator control device and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided an accelerator control device which consists of an auxiliary pedal having means for attachment to a conventional accelerator pedal and which auxiliary pedal is provided with means whereby it may be moved laterally with respect to the conventional pedal whereby to engage in teeth formed in an arcuate arm mounted upon the floorboards of the automobile in which the device may be installed. The device contains many novel features.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and efficient in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel latching means forming a part of the invention.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, a novel auxiliary pedal forming a part of the invention.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof,
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken along line 3-3 of Figure 1, showing the device in unlatched position,
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 but showing the device in latched position,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along line 5-5 of Figure 3,
Figure 6 is an enlarged sectional view taken along line 66 of Figure 1, and
Figure 7 is an enlarged fregmentary sectional view taken substantially along line 7-7 of Figure 5.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein the floorboards 10 of a conventional automobile whereon is pivotally mounted, as indicated at 11, a conventional accelerator pedal 12 having the conventional downwardly extending control rod 13 swivelly connected, as indicated at 14, to the forward under side thereof.
A lower clamp member is generally indicated at 15 and is of inverted U-shape and comprises a bight portion 16 and legs 17 each of which is adapted to abut one side of the conventional pedal 12 adjacent the lower end thereilag. A bolt 18 interconnects the legs 17 beneath the pedal An upper clamp member is generally designated at 19 and is likewise of inverted U-shape construction comprising a bight portion 20 and a pair of dependent legs 21 which abut against the sides of the conventional pedal 12 adjacent the upper end thereof and which legs are interconnected by means of a bolt 22.
There is also provided an auxiliary pedal 23 which is pivotally connected to the bight portion 16 of the lower clamp member 13 by means of a rivet 24 or the like which extends centrally therethrough and through an opening 25 centrally provided in such bight portion 16.
The bight portion 20 of the clamp member 19 is provided with a longitudinal slot 26 through which a pin 27 carried by the auxiliary pedal 23 extends and to the lower end of which is aflixed a block 28 which is slidable between the bight portion 20 and the upper face of the pedal 12. A tension spring 29 interconnects the right side of the block 28, as viewed, for example, in Figures 1, 3 and 4, and the adjacent leg 21. The upper left side of the auxiliary pedal 23 is provided with an upwardly extending foot retaining member 30.
Mounted upon the floorboards 10 adjacent the left side of the pedal 12 as viewed, for example, in Figure l' is a base 31 having a vertically extending standard 32 formed integral therewith. An arcuate plate 33 interconnects the upper end of the standard 32 and the base 31 and is provided with a series of downwardly extending teeth 34 upon that side thereof adjacent the pedal 12.
In operation, it will be apparent that the operator of the vehicle in which the device is installed may place his foot upon the auxiliary pedal 23 and in such manner control the speed of the vehicle by pressing downwardly upon such auxiliary pedal since this action will likewise cause the conventional pedal 12 to likewise move downwardly. Conventional return springs are, of course, provided but not shown in the drawing. When the operator has attained a speed at which he wishes to hold his vehicle, it is only necessary for him to move his foot in a counterclockwise direction, as viewed, for example, in Figure 1 thus pivoting the auxiliary pedal upon the rivet 24 and moving the auxiliary pedal to the left, likewise as viewed in Figure 1, until the left side thereof, which may be slightly tapered upwardly and outwardly, as shown in Figure 4, comes into engagement with one of the adjacent teeth 34. During this movement, the lower portion of the pin will pivot slightly in the block 28 and the latter will, of course, slide to the left as viewed in Figure l, to the position shown in Figure 4. The operator may then move his foot from the pedal entirely and the chosen speed will then be maintained until the operator desires to release the auxiliary pedal 23 from engagement with the teeth 34. This is accomplished by merely touching the auxiliary pedal with his foot to disengage the same from the teeth 34 whereupon the tension spring 29 will act to pull the block 28 and consequently the auxiliary pedal 23 to its initial position in vertical alignment with the conventional pedal 12.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described comprising, in combination with a conventional accelerator pedal and the floor boards of a motor vehicle, the provision of an auxiliary pedal mounted atop said conventional pedal, said conventional pedal extending angularly upwardly, said auxiliary pedal being pivotally connected for lateral swinging movement adjacent its lower end to the lower portion of said conventional pedal, a vertically extending arcuate plate mounted on said floor boards adjacent one side of said conventional pedal, teeth formed on that side of said plate adjacent said pedals, said auxiliary pedal being selectively engageable with said teeth when swung in one direction, and spring means urging said auxiliary pedal out of engagement with said teeth.

A device of the character described comprising, in combination with a conventional accelerator pedal and the floor boards of a motor vehicle, the provision of an auxiliary pedal mounted atop said conventional pedal, said conventional pedal extending angularly upwardly, said auxiliary pedal being pivotally connected for lateral swinging movement adjacent its lower end to the lower portion of said conventional pedal, a vertically extending arcuate plate mounted on said floor boards adjacent one side of said conventional pedal, teeth formed on that side of said plate adjacent said pedals, said auxiliary pedal being selectively engageable with said teeth when swung in one direction, spring means for urging said auxiliary pedal out of engagement with said teeth, and an upwardly extending foot retaining member formed integrally with the upper corner of said auxiliary pedal adjacent said p ate.

A device of the character described comprising, in combination with the floor boards of a motor vehicle 3 and a conventional upwardly and angularly extending accelerator pedal pivoted at its lower end to said floor boards, provision of a lower inverted U-shaped clamp member removably mounted on said accelerator pedal, an upper inverted U-shaped clamp member mounted on said accelerator pedal, an auxiliary pedal centrally pivoted adjacent its lower end to said lower clamp member, a vertically extending arcuate plate mounted on said floor boards adjacent said accelerator pedal, teeth formed on that side of said plate adjacent said accelerator pedal, said auxiliary pedal being selectively engageable with said teeth, and spring means for urging said auxiliary pedal out of engagement with said teeth, said spring means including a slot formed in the bight portion of said upper 4 clamp member, a pin extending through said auxiliary pedal and through said slot, a block aflixed to said pin at the lower end thereof, and a tension spring interconnecting said block and that leg of said upper clamp member remote from said plate.
