DRIVE- GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,649, dated December 26, 1882?,
Application filed September 15, 1882.
Be it known that I, JOHN J.-ELLsWoR'rH, ot' Langston, county of Montcalm, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Drive-Gates; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists in the combinations of devices and appliances hereinafter specified, and more particularly pointed out 'in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side-elevation of a device embodying my invention. Fig;
represents end elevations of the same.
The object of my invention is to provide means for opening and closing gates from a carriage or othervehicle, dispensing with the necessity of alighting for this purpose. I aecom plish this object byproviding the gate with an elevated angular inclined track pivoted in the center and provided with novel means, hereinafter described in detail, and specifically set forth in the claims, whereby the ends of said track may be elevated and lowered and the gate caused to roll back and forth by its own gravity, thus opening and closing.
In carrying out my invention, A is any ordinary gate with extended hanger-bars A and .A provided with suitable rollers, a and a.
B and B are the posts.
G and O are the two arms of an angular track extending horizontally with the gate. Said track is hinged or pivoted to the post B in any proper manner, as SllOWll'i ll) b, and is provided preferably with a metal flange, 1), upon which the rollers a and a are adapted to work.
his a cross-rail secured upon the post B,-to the ends of which the levers E and E are pivoted, as shown at c and a, so that such levers normally stand in depending positions. The cross-rail is sustained by two inclined braces, D D which connect with the post B, and to these braces are pivoted the angles, as at d d, of two bell-crank levers, F and F, one arm of each connecting with the angular track by suitable links, and the other arm connecting by suitable rods with the upper portions of the depending levers E and E, as atfj". The
(No model.)
I construction of the lever mechanism is such that when either of the levers E and E are forced toward the gate the arm 0 is elevated and the arm O lowered into a horizontal position. By this means the gate A, by its own gravity, will roll back upon the arm 0, out of the way, against the stop B When the levers are forced in the opposite direction the arm 0 is brought down to a horizontal position and the outer extremity of the arm 0 is elevated, in consequence of which the gate rcturns to its position on the arm O and the gate is closed. The track may be suspended sufiiciently high for a load of hay to'pass under, if desired. I design, also, to protect it against snow and sleet by a covering, G
I am aware that it is not new to suspend a gate by rollers arranged on a track-bar which is pivoted to a gate-post and raised and lowcred at one end by lever mechanism, so as to open and close the gate by causing it to slide on the track when the latter is tilted. Such, therefore, I do not broadly claim as my invention; but
hat I claim is- 1. The combination, with the angular track, hinged or pivoted at or near its center to one of the gate-posts. and the gate suspended from said track by rollers, of the cross-rail D, secured to the other gate-post, the levers E E,
pivoted in depending positions at the ends of the cross-bar, and the pivoted levers F and F, connected at one end to the angular track and at the other end to the upper ends of the depending levers on the cross-bar, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the angular track O O, pivoted at or near its center to one of the gate-posts, and the gate suspended from said track by rollers, of the cross-rail D, secured to the other gate-post, the braces D D sustaining the cross-bar, the lovers F F, pivoted to the braces and connected with the angular track, and the depending levers E E, pivoted to the ends of the cross-bar, and having their upper portions connected with the lovers on t the braces, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
