Application January 25, 1951, Serial No. 207,770 1 claim. (Cl. zzo- 5) This invention relates to barrels particularly formed of metal and has for its principal objects to provide a simple and easily assembled structure and which is especially adapted for formation from stainless metals.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention, I have provided improved structure the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:

Referring more in detail to the drawings:
1 designates a barrelvconstructed in accordance with the present invention and which includes a band section 2 and end sections 3 and 4 all of which are formed of metal preferably having stainless characteristics and capable of being welded to secure the sections together.
The band section 2 includes a web portion 5 which may have a curved or an arcuate cross section conforming to the shape of the wall of the barrel as shown in Fig. 2.
The side edges of the band are provided with outwardly extending annular llanges 6 and 7 for stiffening the barrel and providing ribs on which the barrel is adapted to be rolled. The band section may beformed by extruding the metal through a suitable die to provide the web 2 and flanges 6 and 7 in strip form after which the extruded strip may be cut to a length conforming with the circumference of the barrel and rolled to bring the ends 8 and 9 together for connection by welding indicated at 10 Fig. 1. The web portion 2 of the band section may be relatively thin, however, the flanges 6 and 7 are thicker to provide the desired strength and to facilitate a welded connection with the end sections 3 and 4 as later described. The flanges may be of any suitable shape but are illustrated in the drawing as having outwardly converging side faces 11 and 12 merging into rounded perpheries 13. The inner circumference of the outer faces 12 of the flanges are preferably provided with annular shoulder-like grooves 14 and 15 for a purpose later described. The web portion of the band section may be provided with an opening 16 in registry with a flange 17 forming a bung opening 18, the flange bling secured to the web portion 5 by welding or the l' e.
The end sections 3 and 4 are of substantially similar construction and include annular wall portions 19 and 20 which may conform in curvature with the web portion 5 of the barrel and have integral heads 21 and 22. The central portions 23 and 24 of the heads 21 and 22 are inset inwardly of the barrel by annular ilange portions 25 and 26 to provide chimes 27 and 28. The insert portions are crowned outwardly to cooperate with the flange portions 25 in stiffening the head ends of the barrel. One of the crowned central portions, for example, 24. is provided with an opening 29 to which is attached a suitable fitting Patented Dec. 7, 1954 ICC (not shown). for example, in the case of a beer barrel,
a fitting for inserting a draft tube. The head at the other curved outwardly as at 32 and 33 to provide flanges 34' and 35 adapted to lit within the annular shoulder-like grooves 14 and 15, previously described. The end sections rnay be formed by pressing the metal in suitable dies to the shape illustrated and described so that they may be inexpensively produced in large quantities.
The end sections are preferably connected with the band section by welding of the flanges 34 and 35 to the flanges 6 and 7 by resistance or ilash welds. Such welds may be quickly and easily made by placing the sections in alignment while being supported in connection with the terminals of a welding circuit so as to pass a Weld producing current across the joints between the respective sections.
In the form of connection shown in Fig. 4, the annular flanges 36 on the end sections 37 are made relatively larger to abut against the outer faces of the flanges 38 thereof. These flanges may then be Welded together as in the lrst described connection.
From the foregoing, it is obvious that I have provided a barrel that is relatively simple in construction, easily assembled, and the parts welded together so that the barrels may be produced at low cost, and particularly from the more expensive stainless metals. The use of such metals not only eliminates the necessity of interior coatings but are stronger so that the weights thereof compare favorably with barrels constructed of the light weight metals such as aluminum and aluminum alloys.
It is also obvious that a barrel constructed in accordance with the present invention is free from joints having crevices, recessesy and similar indentations in which bacteria and other foreign matter might acctunulate. It is also obvious that the location of the welds prevents any burning-through of the metal into the interior of the lfaarrel that might cause rough and irregular inner suraces.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A barrel including a central band section having transversely curved web and annular outwardly extending solid flanges at the ends of the web of substantially greater thickness than the thickness of the web and provided with annular shoulder like grooves at the base of the ilanges in registry with the web on outer sides of the flanges, end sections having annular wall portions curving transversely in substantially continuous curvature from the transverse curvature with said web, said annular walls curving into annular outwardly extending llange portions engaged in said grooves, and welds on outer side faces of the flanges of the band section to secure said terminal edges of the flange portions of the end sections in said grooves.
