To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK D. ADAMS, of Auburn, in the county of Placer and State of Ualit'ornia,liave invented a new and useful Improvement in Letter and Bill Files, of which the following is a full,clear,and exact description.

The object of my invention is to furnish afile for receiving letters, bills, and similar papers in a manner to allow convenient inspection ofany bill or letter on the file; and,further, to combine with the tile a device for fastening the bundle of bills or letters on its removal.

To that end my invention consists in the file constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure l is a perspective View of my improved bill and letter file. Fig. 2 is a detail section, in larger size, showing the arrangement of the fasteners. I A is a base-plate, which is preferably formed ot'.tnetal and attached permanently to aboard, ll. On the plate A are fixed postsa a,receiving in slots at cross rod or wire, I), the ends of which are bent up to form hooks c 0, these hooks being tubular.

0e are the pertorators, which are tubular, pointed at their ends, and attached to the plate A by being screwed into hollow slotted studs d (l on the plate, whereby the perforators are held rigidly in an uprightposition. fisaguidewire attached on plate A, to serve as a guide for placing the letters on the perforators. The cross-bar b fits. looselyin the slots of the posts c, so that it is free to be raised up and down, and when in the downward position the ends of the hooks 0 take over the pointed ends of the perforators 0, so that the perforators and hooks form a continuous wire and allow the letters to be turned over for the inspection of any one on the file. When the bar I) is raised the hooks are carried above the ends of the perforators, as shownin Fig. l, and the bar may be then also turned backward, as shown by dotted lines, out of the way, to allow the removal or placing of the letters upon the perforators.

g is a handle on the bar I), for use in manipulatingit; and his a plate-spring taking against the projection on the bar, so as to hold the hooks in any position in which they may be placed.

The plate A is slotted, as shown at K, beneath the hollow studs d, to receive the heads of fasteners '17. The studs are also slotted on one side, as shown. These fasteners are ordinary paper-clamps,ofsuitable length, and their folded ends extend upward into the perforators e.

To place a bill or letter on the file, the barb, with the hooks c, is to be raised and turned back. The paper is placed against the guidewiref and then pressed down upon the perfo rators, and the hooks being then returned to their place upon the perl'orators, the bills and letters are retained in place and may be turned over for inspection. When the file is filled, the bar and hooks are to be raised in the same manner and turned back, and the perforators then unscrewed from the studs d and drawn out, leaving the fasteners t in the bills or letters. The ends of the fasteners may then be turned down, and the bundle of papers thus fastened can be removed by sliding the heads of the fasteners from the slots K in the baseplate.

Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten t- 1. The combination, with the slotted posts a a and books 0, of the loose cross-barb, whereby the ends of the hooks will take over the perforators and form a continuous wire, as described.

2. The combination, with the base-plate A and perforators c, of the slotted posts a, bar I), and tubular books 0, substantially as described, for operation as set forth.

3. The combination of the perforators e and fasteners t with the slotted base-plate A, having the tubular slotted studs d, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
