To all rwhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IVILLIAM LEWIS, of the city of Brooklyn, Kings county, State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Military-Sword Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the nature of my said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure l, is an elevation of said fastener, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same and a portion of the sword case.

In attaching sword or bayonet cases to the sash or belt a variety of buttons and hooks have been made use of, they however are either insecure or else difficult to detach from the case when required.

The nature of my said invention consists in a plate or escutcheon attached to the waist belt or sash, and provided with a slotted opening that passes a button on the sword case and then retains the shank thereof by a spring latch in such a manner that the sword will hang freely but is firmly fastened to the sash or belt or can be instantly disconnected therefrom by drawing back said spring latch and slipping the button out of the escutcheon.

In the drawing a, is an escutcheon or plate that is connected to the belt or sash by a clamping plate b, on the back with rivets or screws 1, l, passing through the belt or sash.

This escutcheon may be of brass or other material, and is formed with an opening 2, to pass the button o, of the sword case d, and the said opening is elongated as at 3, to receive the shank of said button, while the head of the button is at the back of the escutcheon. I make use of a suitable spring latch or latches which springing across the opening 3, above the shank prevents the button rising and coming out at the opening 2. I have shown the sliding latch e, acted on by the helical or other spring 4, and provided wit-h a button or head 5, outside the edge of the escutcheon, by means of which the latch can be drawn back when the sword is to be disconnected.

My fastening is thus strong durable, easily used in connecting and disconnecting, convenient and reliable, and may be used for sword or bayonet cases.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The escutcheon a, receiving the button c, on the sword case, when combined with the spring latch or its equivalent passing over the shank of the button as and for the purposes specified.
