INVENTOR.
. O: Allomg's United States Patent O CIGARETTE BUTTER AND POCKET ASH TRAY Leonard L. Brock, In. Buffalt, N. Application July 24,- 1950, Serial No. 175,637
-2 Glaims. '(Gl. 131 -1237) This invention relates generally to a smokers aceessory comprising'a'container having'a sliding cover with cigarette butt receiving means therein, and a plate mounted on the container, so that the butt of a cigarette, when inserted in said and cover moved 'into container-closing position, is severed from the cigarette and falls within the container which serves as an ash tray.
A primary object of this invention is to provide a combination cigarette extinguisher and ash tray which can be conveniently carried in the pocket of the user, the device being capable of severing one or both end portions from a partially smoked cigarette, so that a remaining portion of neat form can be retained for future enjoyment.
Another object of the invention is to provide a smokers accessory of the type mentioned above wherein the blade is carried by a holder therefor which serves to close the aperture of the cover when the cover is in container-closing position, this cooperation of elements being thought to be new in devices of this kind.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned wherein the blade is protected against misuse.
Yet another object is to provide in a smokers accessory of this kind, an improved means for supporting the cigarette butt at two points at the time the cut is made, the cutting edge of the blade entering between the supporting members so that a clean eificient cut is effected.
Another object of a specific character is to provide a cutting blade with an edge obliquely disposed with reference to the direction of movement of the cigarette butt during the cutting action, so that a slicing action is obtained.
And a last object to be mentioned specifically is to provide a device of this character which is relatively inexpensive and practicable to manufacture, which is easily cleaned and operated, which is sanitary and safe to use, and which will give generally efiicient and durable service.
With these objects definitely in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of elements and portions which will be hereinafter described in detail in the specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a material part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective, of the device with the cover in closed position;
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view, taken substantially upon the line 2-2 in Figure Figure 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view with the cover in closed position;
Figure 5 is a view somewhat similar to Figure 4 and showing the cover in the position assumed when the cigarette is being extinguished, the cigarette being illustrated in elevation; and,
Figure 6 is an elevational view of the container the view being taken as from the right hand end of Figure 1.
Similar characters of reference designate similar or identical elements and portions throughout the specification and throughout the different views of the drawings.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, this smokers accessory comprises a box-like container 10 having a cover 12 slidably mounted thereon by means of laterally disposed returned edge portions 14 constituting 2,694,400 Patented Nov. 16, 1954 ICC channels which receive outwardlyturried portions 16 on the side wall and at the top of the container. One of the outwardly turned portions 16 has formed therein an upwardly and inwardly opening recess 48, the purpose of which will be presently set forth. A thumb piece 18 is rigidly secured to one end of the cover 12 and is represented in the drawings as comprised of a section of sheet metal returned on itself and secured by a rivet or' the like 20.
The other end of the cover 12 has a plate 22 secured thereon by the rivets 24 and this plate has a resilient,
downwardly extending and returned [plate portion or guide 26 disposed in parallel relation to and in spaced relation below the cover 12 and, as. shown to advantage in Figure 2 of the drawing, having its. longitudinal edges slidably engaged with the side walls of the container 10. In the embodiment illustrated, the plate 26 terminates in a bifurcated cigarette butt engaging member 28, clearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 5. The cover 12 has an aperture 30 with a bevelled edge, and the gap between the arms of the bifurcated cigarette engaging member 28 registers with .the aperture 30. A blade holder 32 is secured by a transversely extending pivot pin 34 in the upper portion of the container. This blade holder has a slot or kerf 36 angularly disposed therein and dimensioned to receive a heel portion of the removable blade 38, the slot being defined by an upper plate-like portion 40 and a lower plate-like portion 42, the upper plate-like portion 40 having a flat top surface substantially parallel to and engaged beneath the cover 12. It should be carefully noted that this upper platelike portion 40 comprises a closure for the aperture 30 when the cover is in container-closing position.
The blade 38 is formed with a cutting edge disposed obliquely with reference to the direction of travel of the cover 12. The blade 38 is held in a position clearly illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, slightly inclined to the horizontal when the container is horizontal, that is, with the cutting edge 44 extending slightly upwardly toward the aperture 30 when the cover is in retracted position, as shown in Figure 5. The blade 38 is provided on its free end portion with a lateral projection 46 which seats in the recess 48 for supporting said blade in operative position beneath the cover 12. Upward swinging movement of the blade 38 is prevented by the slidably removable cover 12. To remove the blade 38 for replacement or other purposes, the cover 12 is removed from the container 10, thus permitting the holder 32 with said blade therein to be swung upwardly about the axis 34.
A stop 50 in the form of a shoulder is formed beneath the free end portion of the plate 26 and is engageable with the top portion of the end wall 54 of the container 12 for limiting the opening movement of the cover 12 in the manner shown in Figure 5 of the drawings. A cigarette 56 is illustrated in the position wherein it is placed when the lighted end thereof is to be severed. The downwardly extending portion 58 of the plate 22 may be knurled to comprise a surface against which matches may be struck.
The operation of this invention will be clearly understood from a consideration of the foregoing description of the mechanical details thereof, taken in connection with the above recited objects and the drawings. In recapitulation, the cigarette 56 is placed in the position indicated in Figure 5 with the cover 12 in open position. The cover is then slid as to the left in Figure 5 so that the blade 38 enters between the cover 12 and the member 28. The member 28 serves as an auxiliary support for the lower end of the cigarette during the slicing or cutting operation. The container is substantially air tight and the severed ignited end of the cigarette is quickly extinguished after severance, when the cover is closed. Of course, ashes and cigarette butts are safely held in the container. The cover will not inadvertently open and a smoker is thus enabled to neatly sever one or both ends from a partially smoked cigarette, saving the remaining portion for future enjoyment. Further description would appear unnecessary.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new 1s:
1. A smokers appliance comprising an elongated container open at its top and including side walls, one of said side walls having a recess in its upper portion, a blade holder comprising a plate-like member pivotally mounted for vertical swinging movement in the container between the upper portions of the side walls and having a kerf therein, a removable blade in the kerf retained against lateral movement by the side walls, a lateral projection on the blade engaged in the recess for securing said blade and the holder against swinging movement in the container, and means for engaging a cigarette with the blade for cutting said cigarette.
2. A smokers appliance comprising an elongated container open at its top and including side walls, one of said side walls having a recess in its upper portion, a blade holder comprising a plate-like member pivotally mounted for vertical swinging movement in the container between the upper portions of the side walls and having a kerf therein, a removable blade in the kerf retained against lateral movement by the side walls, a lateral projection on the blade engaged in the recess for securing said blade and the holder against swinging movement in the container, and means for engaging a cigarette with the blade for cutting said cigarette, said means including a cover slidably mounted on the container and having an opening therein for the reception of the cigarette, said plate-like member being engaged beneath the cover and closing the opening when said cover is in closed position on the container.
