Description

(No Model.)
CARRIAGE AXLE AND BOX. N0. 269,211; 1 v Patented Deo.19,1882'.
WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BUSHROD H. KEMBLE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CARRIAGE AXLE AND BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,211, dated December 19, 1882.
Application filed December 8, 1881. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BUSHROD H. KEMBLE, a citizen of the United States. residing in the city and county ofPhiladelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wheel Boxes and Axles, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the wheel box and axle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section in line as m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists of an axle and box having conical collars, the collar of the axle having two inclined sides and encircled by the collar of the box and closing the inner end of the box, whereby dirt is materially prevented from entering the box from said end, and should it so enter it is forced out therefrom, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the axle, and Bthe wheel-box, which is fitted on the journal portion thereof.
From the inner end of the box projects a conical collar, (3, which is formed with the box.
Formed with the axle is a conical collar, D, which is of less diameter than the collar 0, and so disposed that it is encircled by said collar 0, it being noticed that the two collars project toward each other and the collar D projects into the space between the collar 0 and the inner end of the box.
It will be seen that when the box is fitted in the axle, the position of parts being most clearly shown in Fig. 1, the box runs on the journal portion of the axle and likewise on the collar D of the axle, the collar 0 of the box being in contact with the outer face of the collar D, and the swell or outer end of the box being in contact with the outer face of said 001- lar D, Y
It will also be seen that the outer face of the inner end of the box B extends in an inclined direction upwardly from the point a to the point b, where the collar 0 begins, and the inner face of said collar extends in an inclined direction upwardly from the point I) to the point 0, the termination of said collar, thus forming a V-shaped space the angleot' which is the point Z), equidistant between the points a c.
The collar D has two inclined sides, coinciding with the li'nesa b and I) 0, so that the joint between the collar I.) and end of the box B and collar 0 is upwardly and forward from a to b and upwardly and rearward from b to 0. By these means there are additional bearing-surfaces provided for the box, thus steadying the same and relieving the journal portion of the axle of some of the wearing action of the box. Furthermore, the back a of the collar D, or portion which joins the axle, entirely closes the inner end of the box and serves as a guard against the entrance of dirt, sand, &e., at said end of the box. Should, however, from any cause dirt, sand, 850., be driven into the joint b c, it will be immediately worked upward and outward, and thus prevented from reaching the inside of the box.
. When the box and the axle are worn the not on the axle is tightened and the parts are thereby taken up, whereby lost and irregular motions of the box are prevented and the wheel is caused to run with uniformity and without rattling.
I am aware that it is not new to form an axle with a tapering collar one face of which is inclined and the other face horizontal, the encircling collar of the box having its inner face horizontal to accord with the horizontal exterior face of the collar of the axle, such construction, however, not producing results similar to mine. I disclaim the broad feature of a tapering collar on the axle and an encircling collar on the box.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The axle A, with collar D, in combination with the box B, with collar 0, the collar D having two inclined faces extending outwardly upward from a to b and the other face inwardly upward from b to c, and the box having two inclined faces, one face, a 1), extending outwardly upward and the other face, I) c, extending inwardly upward, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
B. H. KEMBLE.
