GATE FOR CAR-PLATFORMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,859, dated December 12, 1882. Application filed May 1, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR v. BRIESEN, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented an Improved Gate for the Platforms of Railroad-Oars, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in the gates used on the sides of the car-platforms employed on elevated railroads, but is applicable to all railway-cars. Experience has shown that the spaces between the platforms of the cars that constitute a train, not being closed by proper gates when the cars are at the stations, are sources of danger to careless persons, and where there are large crowds. Several lives have already been lost of persons who fell between the platforms onto the tracks immediately before or after the trains had been started. 1
My invention consists in connecting with the gates that close the platforms of the cars against the admission of more passengers wings that will close the spaces between the platforms when said gates are opened, but that will be entirely out of the way when the gates are closed.
In the drawings, the letters A A represent the platforms of the cars.
B B are gates hinged near the ends of each platform, and adapted to he swung parallel with the sides of the car to close the platform, as shown in Fig. 3, and on the left-hand side of Fig. 2, or at nearly right angles the'reto, to open the platform, as shown in Fig. 4, and on the right-hand side of Fig. 2. Acccording to my invention, each of these gates B is connected by an arm or arms, a, or otherwise, with a wing or additional gate, 0, which extends at a proper angle from said gate B and joins in its movements. When the gate B is closed, as in Fig.3, its wing G will be folded against the outer side of the end railing, l), of the car; but when the gate B is opened, as in Fig. 4, and folded against the inner side of the railing D, its wing G will be swung out substantially into line with the side of the car.
above referred to will be prevented; but whenever'the car is in motion and the gates B are closed the wings G will be folded out of the way, so as not to interfere with the passage-of thetrain around curves. The gates or wings 0, being controlled in their movements by the gates B, do not require additional handling.
The details of connection between the gates B and their wings C may be varied. Theconnection may either be rigid, as indicated in the drawings, or flexible, in which latter case the gate B can be arranged to swing on its own pivot, and its wing G on an independent pivot, whereas with the rigid connection shown only one pivot, 11, or shaft is required for the vibration of each gate B and its wing O. V
In Fig. 2 is shown, in the lower left-hand corner, a modified style of rigidconnection a, and the open position of the gate B and closed position of its wing O are there indicated by dotted lines. I
It will be seen from all modifications that when the gate B is folded against the inner side of the railingD the wing 0 projects from said railing, and serves as a guard, and that when the wing O is folded against the outer side of said railing the gate B projects lrom said railing and serves as a guard.
I claim- 1. On a railway-car, the platform-gate B, combined and connected with the extending wingO, so as to move simultaneously therewith, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The gate 13, connected with the wing O, in combination with the railing D on a carplatform, all arranged so that the gate and its wing are adapted to be folded against the inner and outer sides of said railing alternately, substantially as described. y
3. The combination of the gate B and its pivot or hinge b with the rigid arm or arms, a and angular wing G, for operation on the platform of a railway-car, substantially as herein shown and described.
