-This'invention relates to a carton for shipping and display ofelongated articles. l An object of thisinventionis to provide a carton-that simulates an ordinary box, shapewise, when it serves as a shipping container, but which is so designed that its shape may be substantially modified when converted into a display container for counter use, the better to show off the articles of merchandise therein. An object of this invention is to provide a carton which is rectangular in section when in a normal or shipping position but which can be opened-and shifted to a display position in which the articles in the carton slop for proper display. I A further object of this invention is to provide a carton having an article supporting bottom panel that is movable relative to the side walls of the carton from a position in which it is perpendicular to the front and rear walls of the carton when used as a shipping container, to a position in which the front and rear panels are inclined to the bottom panel when the carton is used for displaypurposes.

The above'and other objects and features of the invention will in part be apparent and will in part be obvious from the following detailed description, and the drawings,- in which:

In the following detailed description, and the drawings, like reference characters indicate like parts.

In Fig. 1 are shown two carton blanks l0 and I2. As shown, the blanks nest closely together so that only a minimum amount of scrap is formed when the blanks are cut from an elongated strip. The blanks may be cut from a strip of appropriate sheet material such as paperboard or the like. In Figure 1, the solid lines indicate lines of cut and dash lines indicate score'lines along which the blanks are bent. V

Blank I0 is folded to form thecarton shown in Figs. 2 to 5 inclusive. This blank includes a front panel l3,"side panels Hand 16 hinged to opposite side edges of the front panel and a rear panel I! hinged to a rear edge of side panel 14. The front, side, and rear panels are foldedto form an outer portionor'box, which is of rectangular shape in horizontal sectioni The outer portion of the box is held in position-by means of a tab I8. Tab l8 ishinged to one 'side of the rear panel. Tab I8 is secured by adhesive to the rear edge of side panel It. When so secured, tab I8 holds the sides, rear and frontj panels in position. f c

A bottom panel I9 is connected to the" top of the front panel by a bottom supporting panel 2 I; Bottom supporting panel 2! is of the same size and shape as the front panel, and is hinged to and lies inside of front panel [3 (see Fig. 4) The bottom panel is of the same size as the interior of the outer portion or box of the carton and extends between the front, rear, and s'idepanels of the carton. The bottom panel is held i'n pl'ace by positioning tabs 22 and 23. Tabs 22and 23 engage the inside walls of the side panels as. the side panels slide up and down with respectto the bottom panel. The rear edge of the bottom panel is supported by av rear bottom supporting panel 24. Panel 24 is hinged to the rear edge of the bottom panel and extends upwardly therefrom along the inner wall of the rear panel. The rear panel and the rear bottom supporting panel are connected by means of a tab 26 cut from the material of panel 24. Tab 26 extends through a'slot 2'! in the rear panel. As the sides of the carton slide with respect to the bottom panel, tab 26 slides through slot 21.

When the bottom panel is in the position shown in Fig. 5, the front and rear panels slope rearwardly. In this position, articles 28,. such as small packages of cigars 28', slope rearwardly, thereby exposing each of the articles plainly to view. When the bottom panel is in shipping position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the side panels are raised and tab 26 binds in slot 27 at the shipping position to hold the bottom panel in position perpendicular to the front and rear panels.

Lower edges 29 and 30 of the side panels extend at an acute angle to the front panel and at a supplementary obtuse angle to the rear panel so that, when the carton is in display position, the lower edges of the side panels rest on a supporting table 3| or the like and are in 3 alignment with bottom panel I 9, as shown in Fig. 5. In addition, a tab 32 attached to the lower edge of rear panel I! extends rearwardly thereof and rests on the table to support the carton in display position.

When the carton is. in shipping position, the upper edges of the articles are covered by a cover panel 33. Cover panel 33 is hinged to the upper edge of rear panel 17. a downwardly extending flap 34 which extends inside the front panel as shown in Fig.2 when the carton is used as a shipping container. This portion of the cover panel is attached to upward Cover panel 33 includes shown in Fig. 5. The free edge of portionq34j is provided with a pair of spaced notches 38 forming tabs 39, 40, and 4|. Tab 39 extends into the slot 21 in the rear panel. As shown in Fig. 1, cover panel 33 is provided with a scored line 39 along which it bends when in shipping position and a second scored line 4| along which it is folded when in display position. As indicated, a portion of line 4| is a line of cut.

Stamp 31 forms a sealing strip which holds the carton in shipping position until the carton is to be opened and shifted to shipping position. The stamp is broken when the carton is opened to release the cover panel.

When the carton is used as a shipping container, all corners are square and the carton can readily be packed in an appropriate shipping case. When the shape of the carton is to be modified so that itmay be used as a display holder, stamp 31 is brokenand the end portion of the flap 34 is placed behind the articles. At the same time, the side panels are .pushed downwardly with lower edges 29 and 30 thereof are in the plane of the bottom panel. When the carton shape is so modified, the articles therein slope rearwardly and are plainly exposed to view, as shown in Fig. 5.

Blank I2 differs from blank 10 in that triangular flaps 42 and 43 are hinged to lower edges of the side panels. As shown in Fig. 6, when the carton formed therefrom is set up in display position, flaps 42 and 43 extend outwardly from the side panel so that the carton is supported at the sides and rear when in display position. When this carton is in shipping position, flaps 42 and 43 are aligned with the side panels and lower edges 44 and 45 of the flaps are flush with the bottom panel. Flaps 42 and 43 are right triangular in shape. Rear edges of these flaps 4 are in alignment with side edges of the rear panel when the carton is in shipping position. Edges 44 and of these flaps are perpendicular to the rear edge, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6.

The cartons can quickly and easily be shifted from shipping to display position, and, when in display position, display the contents in a proper sloping position.

The cartons shown are subject to structural modification without departing from the spirit and scope' of the appended claim.

Having described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A display and shipping carton formed from a one-piece blank of sheet material which comprises a front panel, side panels and a rear panel, the lowermost edges of the side panels extending at an' acute angle to the front panel and an obtuse angle to the rear panel, a bottom supporting panel hinged to the top edge of the front panel, said bottom supporting panel being ofthe same length as the front paneland extending downwardly inside thereof, a bottom panel hinged to the lower edge of the bottom supporting panel,

the depth of said bottom panel being equalto the distance between the front and rear panels, a panel hinged to the rear edge of thebottom panel for supporting the same, the rear panel having a transverse slot between the ends thereof, there being a tab cut from the rear bottom supporting panel and extending downwardly through said slot, the rear panel sliding along the rear bottom supporting panel in face-to-face relation therewith, between a display position in which the lower edges of the side panels are in the plane of the bottom panel and a shipping position in which the bottom panel is perpendicularto the front and rear panels and at an angle to the plane of the bottom edges of the side panels, the tab binding in the slot when the bottom panel is in shipping position. v
