Application October 13, 1951, Serial No. 251,236 1 claim. (ol. 226-2) My invention relates to message holders, and more particularly to apparatus and a method for assembling message holders of the cartridge type.

The invention is primarily intended as a novelty device for juveniles, in that the cartridge will contain printed messages, on small rolls of paper, that will appeal to children.

My invention has for its object the provision of a machine and a method for conveniently and cheaply assembling the three parts of the device; that is, the bullet nose, the roll of paper containing a message, and the cartridge shell.

The single ligure shows a conveyor, partly in section, together with the assembly forms or molds, whereby the bringing of the parts into assembled relation is facilitated.

A completed cartridge 6 is shown as being discharged from the conveyor, and comprises a shell 1, a nose 8 Within which is contained the paper roll 9 that has a message or the like imprinted thereon.

The apparatus for assembling the cartridge parts comprises conveyor pulleys `lll and Il, one of which is driven, and a conveyor belt I2. 'I'he upper run of the belt is supported by a table I3, against sagging.

Recessed blocks I4, only ve of which are here shown, are secured to the conveyor for use in assembling the cartridge parts. `The lower portions of the recess n each block is shaped to loosely receive the cartridge nose 8 at the rst station, during travel of the conveyor. At the second station, the paper roll 9 is dropped `into the nose. The shell 1 is then dropped into the block at the third station and loosely rests upon the upper edge of the nose 8, in surrounding relationship to the paper roll. At the fourth station, the partially assembled cartridge is carried beneath a presser roller I which will push the cartridge snugly into partly telescoped engagement with the nose, the cartridge shell being slightly flared or beveled at its lower edge and having tight frictional t with the reduced portion of the nose when pressed downwardly by the roller l5, The cartridges 6 will be discharged rom the conveyor by gravity as indicated. The recipient of the cartridge will pull the nose 8 from the shell and remove the message.

I claim as my invention:

The method of assembling message holders of cartridge-like form, that have nose and body portions with telescopic fit, comprising the steps of dropping a cup-like nose portion in upwardlyexposed position, into a mold-like member having a cavity of reduced diameter at its lower end, for loose lit with the nose portion, dropping a paper message roll into the said nose portion, and, thereafter placing a peripherally-flanged cartridge shell into a widened portion of said cavity and into telescopic relation with the paper roll and the upper part of the nose, and finally pressing the cartridge shell into the cup-like nose portion until the flange of such shell abuts the upper periphery of such nose portion.
