Description

(No Model.)
T. O. WOODWARD.
SEWING MACHINE.
Patented Dec. 5, 1882.
N. PETERS. Mo-MW WM 0.;
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
THOMAS C. WOODWARD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SEWING- MACHINE.
SPEGIFICA'IION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 268,764, dated December 5, 1882.
Application filed November 4, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern e Be it known that I, THOMAS C. WOODWARD, of New York city, New York, have invented certain new, useful, and important Improvements in Sewing-Machines, described in this specification and the drawings thereof. r
The invention consists of improvements re= lating to the treadle, whereby an easy movement is attained with or without lubricant, and treadle-plates of difi'erent sizes can be used and adjusted.
Figure l is afront view of the improvements applied to a portion of a sewing-machine; Figs. 2, 3, and 4 detail views thereof.
in the form of constructioushown the treadle-plate A'has V-shaped journals B G,
in V-shaped bearings D E, in adjustable supports K L, on the treadle-rod M, which may be made square, and held from turning by the arms N O of the stand-brace P, adapted thereto by square recesses, or otherwise, in their ends. The journals may be reversed, the V-shaped journals being on thesupports and the V-shaped bearings being on the treadleplate, and the bearings may have oil-recesses It, to prevent the lubricant when used from escaping or soiling garments or carpet.
The details of construction and operation may be varied within the scope ofthe improvements. Forexample, the supports may be made adjustable vertically as well as laterally independently.
I claim as my invention 1. Theoombination,in sewing mechanism,of a treadle-plate, A, having V-shaped journals B C, independently-adjustable supports K L, having V-shaped bearingsD E,with oil-recesses R, square treadle-rod M, aud brace P, having arms N 0, adapted to the treadle-rod, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in sewing mechanism,
of a treadle-plate having V-shaped journals,
independently-adjustable supports having V- shaped bearings with lubricant-recesses, andseby the stand-brace, substantially as set forth.
anism, of a treadle-plate, independently-adjustable supports, and intermediate V-shaped 8. A treadle-plate having V-sha-ped journals adapted to sewing mechanism, substantially as set forth.
9. A treadle-plate support having adjustable V-shaped bearings, adapted to a treadleplate, having V--shaped journals, and adapted to sewing mechanism, substantiallyas set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my signature, the 3d dayof November, 1882, in presence of two witnesses, in the city of Washin gton, District of Columbia.
THOMAS C. WOODWARD.

cured on a square treadle-rod held from turning 7. The combination, adapted to sewing mechjournals and bearings, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in sewing mechanism,
